Andor Season 2 May See a Big Change From One Character

The Star Wars fanbase is notoriously hard to please, even if you exclude the “anti-woke” faction. The divisiveness has reached a fever pitch recently, between the hoards of hate comments aimed at Amandla Stenberg of The Acolyte and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy saying she has to completely “drown out” the fandom in order to concentrate while making New Jedi Order. That’s why it’s all the more surprising that Andor — the little Star Wars series that could — a diverse series about one character from one film that ends up dying at the end of it, is pretty well-liked across the board.

Andor has given fans a lot to chew on after its first season. Situated directly before Rogue One, the series offers a zoomed-in look at the ordinary, non-Force-sensitive heroes who are part of the Rebellion. It’s the most grown-up series in the franchise, unafraid to expose the Empire’s fascistic and colonialist practices and unafraid to show the more realistic aspects of these characters’ relationships and lives.

Two of the most fascinating characters in Andor are Dedra Meero and Syril Karn. While Dedra and Syril may be Imperialist villains, they are also a lot more complex than we typically see in that category. Due to these three-dimensional characterizations, plus hints and clues given outside the context of the show, fans have begun speculating whether one of them would defect to the Rebellion in Andor Season 2.

The Andor Season 2 Fan Theory

In 2023, TikTok user mara.j.skywalker broke down a couple of reasons why she thinks: a) someone will defect to the Rebellion and b) Syril will be the man to do so. For starters, there is a shot of Cassian and Syril in a sewer together. This “buddy cop” moment could absolutely lend credence to the theory that the two will be working together in the future. Secondly, Syril mainly seems to be motivated by a sense of justice rather than an inherent need for power and control. Once he learns that the Empire doesn’t care about bringing people to justice, just obtaining absolute power, he’ll grow disillusioned with it.

She goes on to theorize whether that disillusionment could occur through the relationship that’s starting to form between Dedra and Syril. There’s obviously a huge power imbalance with Dedra being in the ISB and, let’s face it, just who they are as people. Perhaps the pair will start to go down the romantic route, but Dedra will be unable to let her guard down even for one moment. This inability to relinquish power might begin to open Syril’s eyes to who Dedra (and the Empire by extension) really is.

At Disney’s D23 event, new bombshells were dropped about Andor’s upcoming season, with Cassian actor Diego Luna saying that Season 2 will change how you watch Rogue One. Kyle Soller spoke with Esquire about the reveals from that weekend, too, such as Rogue One characters Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) joining the cast.

“There’s just more people, more planets, more worlds… What’s amazing about dropping back in for this season is the time gaps that are going to be instituted to take you up the full five years before coming into
Rogue One
at the end,” Soller revealed. “So there’s huge amounts of growth that’s happening within the world of
Andor
, but also in Syril’s world…”

Soller’s reference to growth happening in Syril’s world echoes the fan theory about his character evolving past his antagonistic origins. Is there any chance of Dedra being the one to defect? Well, there does seem to be more tangible evidence to support it being Syril, but this Reddit thread points out some of Dedra’s story and character traits that make her a good candidate, too:

However, anyone who has seen the first season of Andor knows how much the Empire would suffer if they did lose her to the Rebellion. The Empire has to remain somewhat threatening, or else the Rebels have way too much of the upper hand going into the original trilogy; the stakes wouldn’t be as high. Andor’s Season 2 release has been delayed from August 2024 to now, most likely, January 2025, though a final date has yet to be confirmed. Stream Andor Season 1 on Disney+. If you’re looking for even more Star Wars content on the streaming service, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, starring Mark Hamill, Gaten Matarazzo, and Ahmed Best, is heading to the platform on Sept. 13.
