Bananahead Featured, Reviews Film Threat

HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! The dream of making it in Hollywood is often a nightmare in Christopher Greenslate’s thriller short Bananahead.
Andi Sanger (Sally Maersk) is an aspiring actor who, as luck would have it, is up for the role of Christine, the lead character in her mother’s book Bananahead. Though Andi considers this an opportunity of a lifetime, the lingering memories of her mother’s unsolved disappearance years ago continue to haunt her. The whole situation is a publicist’s dream.
Looking for a bit of solitude to prepare for the role, Andi moves into her grandmother’s home, which is being renovated. Her hard work pays off as she gets the role. Seeking inspiration, Andi searches through her grandmother’s junk and finds a key to a locked room. Not knowing that the room may be haunted, Andi has dreams and visions of her mother’s life and her family’s curse.
“…the ghosts of her past haunt her ever since her mother’s unsolved disappearance many years ago.”
Bananahead turns what is every actor’s dream of becoming a star into a nightmare. Andi finds herself at the precipice of stardom, but even as far as she has come to reaching that goal, it is always out of reach. Is Andi cursed to live out the destiny of her mother, grandmother, and so on?
I love how writer/director Christopher Greenslate uses the horror genre and turns Bananahead into an allegory of the Hollywood dream as a lottery ticket—only a lucky few can win. What Greenslate does so well is follow the path of the emerging star and run a horror story alongside it. As Andi, Sally Maersk walks us down that path to paranoia and insanity. It’s a clear portrayal of how Hollywood can consume you.
Bananahead brilliantly turns the Hollywood dream into a chilling nightmare, exploring the dark side of ambition and fame. Christopher Greenslate expertly weaves horror elements with the story of an aspiring star, creating an unsettling allegory of how the pursuit of stardom can consume and destroy. Sally Maersk delivers a haunting performance as Andi, making this short film a captivating and eerie watch.
Bananahead screened at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival.
