Born Again Is ‘Similar’ to X-Men ’97, Says Marvel Boss

Summary
Daredevil: Born Again
draws inspiration from X-Men ’97, aiming to refresh a fan-favorite series with new directions and uncharted territories.
The series will explore evolved characters and societal changes, introducing political intrigue into Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s conflict.
Actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s involvement in the series’ development led to a more fan-oriented narrative, with their collaboration and feedback shaping the final product.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, recently drew an intriguing comparison between Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97. The new series’ title references both a comic book arc and the new start the character is getting under the Disney+ banner.
During his interview in The Official Marvel Podcast, Winderbaum talked about the Matt Murdock-led series, pointing out that, like X-Men ’97, the new Daredevil series aims to refresh a fan-favorite series while steering it into uncharted territories.
Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love. But it’s taking it in a new direction.
The updated series, according to Winderbaum, reflects how society and its characters, including Matt Murdock and his nemesis Wilson Fisk, have evolved. He hinted at a storyline that transcends their previous battles, introducing political intrigue into their conflict. This element of political maneuvering suggests a layered plot that will explore broader themes and character dynamics.
“These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed. Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before. It’s no longer enough to try to murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.”
Daredevil: Born Again Stars Shared How Fans’ Feedback Helped the Series
During the Fan Expo Boston 2024, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio discussed the collaborative process behind the scenes, which shows a pivotal shift from the original plans to a more fan-oriented continuation of the narrative. The actors’ involvement in the series’ development has been important, especially after initial feedback led to a halt in production. This pause allowed for a reevaluation of the show’s direction, which both actors found necessary and ultimately beneficial. Cox said (via ComicBook):
“Marvel had been incredibly open-minded and willing to correct course, and incredibly supportive. Early on, we were trying something that was a bit different, and very quickly they were able to identify that wasn’t maybe working as well as it could’ve done. Where we are now, I think I can speak for both of us that we feel very happy.”

D’Onofrio expanded on Cox’s thoughts, emphasizing the partnership that he and Cox shared throughout this process. He portrayed their collaboration as a unifying force that kept the series true to its characters and respectful of its fan base.
“The best thing about the situation is what Charlie just said about the bosses at Marvel, and also the fact that Charlie and I were a team. We just supported each other in everything that each other wanted, whether we were in the scene or not. Whether it featured our characters, it didn’t matter. As a team, Charlie and I considered the story and the fans. Literally, I’m not sh*tting you. You guys, we considered you constantly and brought you up constantly.”
He pointed out how their collective commitment transcended individual scenes, focusing instead on the broader narrative and its reception by the fans.
Daredevil: Born Again
is scheduled to premiere in 2025.
