Brave New World’s Anthony Mackie Explains New Supersuit

Dec 3, 2024

Anthony Mackie has been a part of the MCU for a decade, first playing Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Following Avengers: Endgame, he’s even taken on the mantle of Captain America. However, there’s one major problem that has bugged fans about his time as Cap, and Mackie has finally addressed it ahead of Captain America: Brave New World’s release — Sam Wilson’s first standalone movie.

Appearing at the Disney APAC Showcase (via Deadline), Mackie inadvertently solved one of the biggest plot holes created by the latest trailer for Brave New World. “It’s a high-tech suit,” Mackie said of his new Captain America costume. The trailer showed Wilson testing out his new suit in combat, and achieving feats that were guaranteed to kill any normal person. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) were able to withstand such heavy punishment because of their supersoldier serum, but Sam Wilson is just a regular guy. Mackie explained that the new suit allowed Wilson to keep up with his superpowered predecessors. He explained:

“I can kick harder, I can fly faster, and it gives me the ability to be more agile in my skills, so it’s taking all my skills to a completely different level.”

According to the actor, Sam Wilson acquired the suit during a brief vacation in Wakanda. “I went to Wakanda, met with everybody in Wakanda, we had dinner,” he joked. It is uncertain whether the scene will feature in Captain America: Brave New World, or if Sam Wilson’s trip will be explained through a line of dialogue. Just in case audiences miss it, when the film is released on February 14, 2025, Mackie’s got all the details. He continued:

“It was a great time. They threw me a welcome party. It was dope. But when I was leaving, they gave me a suit, right? I put it on.”

Captain America Fights Red Hulk in ‘Brave New World’

Sam Wilson is going to need that new suit for what’s coming his way in Captain America: Brave New World. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios announced that Harrison Ford would be playing Thadeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (taking over from the late William Hurt), a.k.a. Red Hulk. As skilled a soldier as Wilson is, it’s safe to say that Red Hulk could squish him with his pinky finger. That was on most fans’ minds in the latest trailer, which saw Wilson go toe-to-toe with the red-skinned giant.

The new trailer also gave us the best look yet at Joaquin Torres as the new Falcon. Torres (played by Danny Ramirez) first appeared in the Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the show, he became a close and trusted ally of the titular heroes. Brave New World is putting Torres forward as Sam Wilson’s replacement Falcon and the latest trailer even gives Torres a flight suit of his own. Captain America: Brave New World releases in theaters on February 14, 2025 (making it one of the weirdest Valentine’s Day date movies in recent memory).
