Breaking Down Every Easter Egg From the Trailer
Jul 21, 2023
The enthralling world of Willy Wonka is set to be fully revealed to us, as Warner Bros. Pictures has released the highly awaited trailer for Timothée Chalamet’s newest endeavor, fittingly named Wonka. This movie will explore the origins of Willy Wonka, a figure immortalized in Roald Dahl’s books, and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film.
While we’ve already seen Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp as this renowned chocolatier, the Wonka trailer takes us back to his early days, illustrating his quest to becoming a master of candy wizardry.
Produced by David Heyman, known for his involvement in Barbie and the Harry Potter franchise, and directed by Paul King, the creative force behind the Paddington films, Wonka aims to veer away from recreating the classic Gene Wilder masterpiece. Instead, King intends to pay homage to old-time musicals, a genre close to his heart, and make something rather original and unique.

Viewers got their first glimpse of Chalamet as Wonka in the newest trailer for the movie. Timothée Chalamet portrays a young, ambitious chocolatier who uses his charm and personality to capture a crowd gathered in a busy town center. The journey continues as Wonka overcomes obstacles put in his path by a chocolate mafia that wants to prevent the growth of his chocolate company. The movie will feature songs composed by the legendary Neil Hannon, as the teaser clearly shows.
For fans of the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, or Dahl’s cherished children’s book, the Wonka trailer offers a feast of Easter eggs. Clad in Willy Wonka’s signature velvet jacket and brown top hat, Chalamet swirls around lamp posts and showcases his inventiveness by creating a chocolate that causes his adversaries to float skyward. And as the trailer concludes, the esteemed Hugh Grant, known for his dastardly villain in Paddington 2, makes an appearance as a rather patrician Oompa-Loompa.

The Oompa-Loompas originated from Loompaland and began working with Wonka when he offered them cocoa beans as payment. The trailer’s final scene unveils Hugh Grant’s character as an Oompa-Loompa who has been following Wonka. Perhaps Grant’s character follows Wonka from Loompaland, a place the chocolatier visited during his formative years.
As Chalamet’s Wonka encounters an intimidating ‘chocolate cartel’ that threatens to thwart his ambitions of starting his own chocolate company, the joy of the trailer’s progression continues. Jim Carter plays the intimidating business adversary of Willy Wonka, Arthur Slugworth, who admonishes him harshly that selling chocolate without a store is impossible.
As the movie delves into Wonka’s origin story, it also offers glimpses into the development of his iconic candies. The brief glimpse of chocolates that make people float hints at the inclusion of Easter eggs that pay homage to Wonka’s most renowned confections. Who knows, we may even be treated to the everlasting delight of an Everlasting Gobstopper.
Wonka’s Cast and Characters Include Sally Hawkins and Olivia Colman
In this delightful escapade, Timothée Chalamet and Hugh Grant are joined by Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and comic genius Rowan Atkinson, best remembered for his legendary role as Mr. Bean. Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Natasha Rothwell, Jim Carter, and Sally Hawkins, who plays Wonka’s mother, round out the supporting cast.
Based on Paul King’s novel and the fascinating characters created by Roald Dahl, Simon Farnaby and Paul King wrote the film. Behind the scenes, the film’s creative team includes director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung, well-known production designer Nathan Crowley, editor Mark Everson, costume designer Lindy Hemming, and composer Joby Talbot. Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy also provided the film with its original music. Critics have thus far praised Chalamet’s casting and King’s directing, and interest in the movie has been high.
