Carla Baratta Talks ‘Mayans’ Season 5, Women Doing The “Dirty Work” & More [Templo Talk]

Jun 22, 2023

It says a lot about a character when she’s surrounded by macho biker guys who regularly get in fights and kill people and somehow she’s still the most fierce, scariest person there. But that’s how you can describe Adelita, aka Louisa, on “Mayans M.C.” She’s a rebel leader and a killer, but she’s also a caring mother and protector. And in this episode of Templo Talk: A Mayans M.C. Podcast, Carla Baratta, who plays Adelita, joins the show to talk about the final season of the FX series and what makes her character one of the most interesting in the ensemble cast.

We are now in the last half of Season 5, the final season, of “Mayans M.C.,” and it’s clearly time to set the stage for what is destined to be a bloody ending. And of course, we have to talk about Episode 6 of ‘Mayans,’ titled “My Eyes Filled and Then Closed on the Last of Childhood Tears,” which serves as a bit of a breather, as we take a day off from the club life and dive deep into what’s going on with our favorite MC at home.
After we discuss the new episode, we also share an interview with Carla Baratta, as we dive deep into the character of Adelita, who has proven herself to be one of the most feared characters in a show filled with killers, but also a woman who will fiercely protect her family. Adelita is just one of the various female characters who are given incredible stories over the past couple of years on the show. And this fact is not lost on Baratta, as she noticed how ‘Mayans’ has been elevating the stories of female characters recently.

“I feel like she’s taking care of her family, like a lion…And all of the ladies this season are the ones doing the dirty work,” Baratta said. “I will not say it’s a feminist show because a lot of bad things happen to all of the girls and ladies in the show. A lot of killing, a lot of horrible things. But I will say that it’s a show that portrays the strength of female characters, and it gives them the chance to have their own storyline and not rely on the storyline of a man to have a moment on screen and a powerful journey.”
Baratta also has a unique perspective when it comes to the series’ inclusivity and diversity. In the U.S., it’s noteworthy when you see a series like ‘Mayans,’ which has a ton of Latino actors in the cast and POCs behind the camera. But coming from Venezuela, Baratta is used to being surrounded by Latin folks on a set. That said, she’s well aware of just how impactful it can be to see a series like ‘Mayans’ portray Latin culture in such a respectful way.
“For me, coming from Latin America and being on the show and seeing the respect to the Latino community, for me, it’s something I’ll always be grateful for,” she said. “And the fact that we were on TV for five years and that most American viewers were not Latino families, especially at the beginning, that was more beautiful because it’s like opening your house to this new culture and new people. It’s beautiful, and I wish we could have more shows like that.”
“Mayans M.C.” airs new episodes each Wednesday, with those episodes coming to Hulu the next day. You can hear our full discussion below:
