Colin Farrell’s Divisive Mind-Blower Sugar Gets a Surprise Season 2

Oct 6, 2024

Known for having the biggest twist in any show this year, Sugar will continue to blow minds in an upcoming second season from Apple TV+. The first season followed John Sugar (Colin Farrell), a mysterious private investigator trying to figure out the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer. However, as the show unfolded, the gritty crime drama turned into something else entirely, bewildering many while captivating others. Clearly, Sugar did more than enough to score a renewal.

The finale of the eight-episode first season of Sugar left things open for a continuation of the series, primarily featuring Sugar taking on new cases across America. Due to its subversive nature, the neo-noir series had a very low-key debut on Apple TV+, and it honestly seemed only avid subscribers of the platform tuned in for it. It’s not clear if it was a smash-hit for the streaming service or anything of the sort, but Apple TV+ continues to show why it’s arguably the best streamer out there with its commitment to producing high-quality original programming. In an official press statement, Sugar executive producers Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon shared their excitement for the show’s renewal, confirming Farrell’s return as the titular character.

“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace ‘Sugar,’ and we are thrilled to return for a second season. We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”

The gnarly twist unveiled midway through the first season completely shifted the status quo of the detective crime drama. Sugar, which initially received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, became a divisive yet must-watch show by one of the best streamers out there. While only Farrell is the only actor confirmed to return as John Sugar, the first season boasted a fantastic supporting crew. The ensemble cast for the first season of Sugar featured Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez. For those who have not watched it, be sure to stay away from spoilers so as to not ruin the big reveal. It’s worth the binge.

Colin Farrell Can’t Stop Winning on TV

Sugar is by far the most shocking piece of television of the past year, but series star Farrell is not done on the small screen just yet. After impressing critics with his performance as detective John Sugar (the show boasts an 81% Rotten Tomatoes Score), Farrell is now on HBO portraying the iconic Batman villain in The Penguin, which is already becoming a pop culture hit on the internet. Farrell is assuredly getting Emmy buzz for both shows, but it’s more than likely the HBO series garners more attention during the awards season.

Above all, Farrell is continuing to show why he is one of the most versatile actors in the world, but now on the television screen. Sugar, in particular, is a series that has to be seen to be believed, especially for those who love the neo-noir genre. Meanwhile, The Penguin, interestingly enough, marks Farrell’s second time this year undergoing an extreme physical transformation for the lead role. For those that want to understand that reference, best believe a complete binge of Apple TV+’s most innovative show, Sugar, is in order.
