Comedy Series Emmys 2024 Predictions And Contenders

Mar 29, 2024

If we learned anything over the guild awards marathon earlier this year it’s that the industry simply adores “The Bear.” You could not attend a ceremony where any television award was being handed out without the hit FX series dominating the proceedings. In fact, we think from a guild perspective it took home more trophies than even “Oppenheimer” (or at least it seemed that way). It’s also the reigning Comedy Series category champion and, despite the Emmys being delayed to January, that win was actually for its first season released in June 2022.

Joining “The Bear” in the eight-contender field should be previous nominees “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and, returning after two years, “Hacks.” Then things get interesting. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has been nominated 10 times previously and we expect it to be recognized for its 12th and final season. “What We Do in the Shadows” has earned two previous nominations and despite being overlooked for its fourth season, should get the greenlight for season five (the program will end with its upcoming sixth season). Another FX title, the critically lauded and Peabody Award-winning “Reservation Dogs” should make the cut for its final go-around, but considering the previous snubs its endured, we don’t expect anyone to take a nod for granted.
Two additional shows fighting over the last slots are Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” and, a genuine Netflix hit, “The Gentlemen.” We’re not sure the former truly fits the comedy categorization, but the streamer is taking its chances (as opposed to the easier Drama Series race). Other programs with a chance are Prime Video’s “I’m A Virgo,” the recent Netflix pickup, “Girls5Eva,” CBS’ hit comedy “Ghosts,” Paramount+’s “Fraiser” revival, Prime Video’s “Gen V” (also should likely be in the Drama field), the canceled Max program “Our Flag Means Death,” HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones,” and Peacock’s “Ted.” [Posted March 29]
