‘Dark Winds’ Season 3 Trailer Reveals Ominous Developments for AMC Series
Jan 5, 2025
A new trailer for Season 3 of the Robert Redford and George R. R. Martin executive-produced AMC noir series Dark Winds has arrived. In the beginning of the teaser clip, Navajo Tribal Police chief Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) ominously proclaims, “When I was a boy, when I went to school, we were taught that monsters walked the Earth.”
The expanded eight-episode third season of Dark Winds premieres on March 9 via AMC. Season 3 picks six months after the conclusion of Season 2, the latter ending with a decision that appears to haunt Leaphorn in the new season.
“When you kill a man he’s bound to you. I’ve accepted it, and I am prepared to go on living with it, everyday,” Leaphorn says to his partner Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon). Season 3 traces Leaphorn and Chee’s journey as they investigate two boys’ disappearance. The only evidence the officers have to go on is a blood-stained patch of ground and an abandoned bicycle.

We’ve compiled a guide to the cast and characters of Dark Winds, the hit AMC series.
In the teaser trailer for Season 3 of the noir Dark Winds, foreboding scenes such as Leaphorn inspecting a body hanging upside down, hundreds of bugs crawling out of a sink, and a looming Nosferatu-like silhouette populate the clip. Watch below:
The end of Season 2 also saw deputy Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) departing the Navajo Tribal Police for a job with the U.S. Border Patrol. In the third season of Dark Winds, she works to untangle a human and drug trafficking conspiracy, raising the stakes for Season 3.
Among the guest stars for the fresh slate of shows include Jenna Elfman as FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington, A. Martinez reprising his role as Scarborough Police Department acting chief Gordo Sena, Terry Serpico as Border Patrol Senior Chief Ed Henry, and Tonantzin Carmelo as Border Patrol Agent Eleanda Garza.
‘Dark Winds’ Was 35 Years in the Making
Dark Winds is adapted from the mystery novel series by the late Tony Hillerman. Seasons 1 and 2 were based on 1978’s Listening Woman and 1980’s People of Darkness. Dark Winds was created by Graham Roland, who executive produces alongside Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin.
The seemingly disparate duo of Redford and Martin are linked in their admiration for Hillerman’s novels. The Game of Thrones author is a Hillerman fan and met Hillerman when they both resided in New Mexico. Sundance Film Festival founder Robert Redford is also a longtime admirer of Hillerman’s books and acquired the screen rights in 1986, but the journey in bringing Hillerman’s works to the screen was a difficult one.
A 2022 Hollywood Reporter feature on Dark Winds noted that Redford found it difficult to get an adaptation greenlit because “studios lost interest, considering the novels’ Native lead characters to be uncommercial.” In 1991, Redford attempted to make the big-screen feature The Dark Wind, but the project ended up going straight to video.
“That was disappointing to [Redford],” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter, “and he wasn’t able to get a studio to finance more of them.” 30-plus years on, it’s encouraging to see that Redford was finally able to present Dark Winds, despite the real monsters walking the earth, and that the series is both a critical and commercial success.
