David Oyelowo’s New Wild West Series From Taylor Sheridan Arrives Nov 5

Sep 7, 2023

Writer/director Taylor Sheridan (“Wild River,” “Yellowstone,” “Hell Or High Water”) leaves no stone unturned in his exploration of both the Wild Wild West and the echoes of masculinity that still pervade within American culture. Whether it’s “Yellowstone,” a more contemporary look at cowboys and masculine figures created by their rugged environments, or “1883,” a classic Western tale of frontier life, Sheridan constantly reexamines this theme in all his work. The latest from his Paramount+ dynasty is the series, “Lawman: Bass Reeves,” starring executive producer and Emmyaward nominee David Oyelowo.

Thought to be a series that would crossover with “1883” as they are set in a similar time period, that’s no longer the case (though Sheridan is often seemingly looking for excuses to interconnect his universes; see all the “Yellowstone” spin-offs).
The series centers on the most legendary Black lawman, Bass Reeves, and tells his stories in the Old West. The series also features Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, Donald Sutherland, and Dennis Quaid.
Here’s the official synopsis:
From executive producers Taylor Sheridan (1883) and David Oyelowo (Selma) comes the untold story of the most legendary lawman in the Old West: Bass Reeves. “Lawmen Bass Reeves” follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.
Once dated just for the fall, “Lawman: Bass Reeves” now has an official premiere date of November 5 on Paramount+. Watch the new teaser trailer below.
