DC Studio Co-Chief James Gunn Debunks Casting Rumors on Who Will Play the Superhero
Mar 21, 2023
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn is gearing up for the latest installment of Superman. However, as many fans of the superhero movie franchise are already aware, the previous star of the massively successful series, actor Henry Cavill, will not return to the role. In a tweet sent out to his 1.4 million Twitter followers on Dec. 14 Gunn relayed that after meeting with fellow DC executives and Henry Cavill, the latter will not reprise his role as Superman. James Gunn added they have other projects in line for Henry Cavill in the works. Cavill confirmed the news on his official Instagram the same day that Gunn broke his silence. While fans of the series are still digesting this shocking news, speculation continues to surround who will take over the much-coveted role of Superman and what the plot will entail.
On Jan. 13, a tweet written by James Gunn in response to a fan-made image of HBO’s Euphoria actor James Elordi as Superman, the former wrote:
“My thoughts are no one has been cast as Superman yet. Casting, as is almost always the case with me, will happen after the script is finished or close to finished, and it isn’t. We’ll announce a few things in not too long, but the casting of Superman won’t be one of them.”
While we don’t know who will play Superman next, with names besides James Elordi being thrown into the ring, such as Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Alden Ehrenreich, we at least have an idea of the plot. DC studios have revealed that Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, will relive his days as a rookie reporter in Metropolis in the new film.
Pivotal characters include Kent’s love interest and fellow journalist Lois Lane. Gunn added in his 2022 tweet that he couldn’t be more excited about the next installment of the series, with more news to come sometime at the beginning of 2023.
