At 99 years old, legendary actor Dick Van Dyke is just as quick and sharp as ever. Now he’s revealing how he’s managed kept his youthful energy as he eyes tackling a second century.

Appearing on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Van Dyke broke down his exercise routine that he says has been crucial.

The Mary Poppins and Night at the Museum actor told hosts Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen that he has always worked out three times a week — and still does.

“Somebody said, ‘To what do you attribute your age and physical condition?’” Van Dyke said. “I said, ‘I’ve always exercised three days a week.’ We go to the gym, still, three days a week, and I think that’s it.”

Danson noted he’s seen Van Dyke at the gym and marveled, “If I got [to the gym] early enough, I would see you literally work out on some weight machine, and then — almost like you were doing circuit training — you would, not walk, to the next machine, but dance. You literally dance to the next machine! And you said that you would go the the gym and work out and then you would go home and swim laps. Then you would get back into bed and take a nap.”

“Exactly,” confirmed Van Dyke.

Pressed for what exercises he prefers at the gym, Van Dyke explained, “I’m doing a lot of stretching and yoga-type thing. Sit ups. And they have machines, something for almost every exercise.”

Danson noted that Van Dyke once told him he never thought about age until about 15 years ago when he was asked to write a book on the subject, which resulted in the book Keep Moving.

Van Dyke is Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner who was a 1995 inductee into the Television Hall of Fame, a 2012 recipient of the SAG life achievement award and a 2021 honoree at the Kennedy Center Honors. In 2023, to commemorate Van Dyke’s 98th birthday, CBS — the same network on which he began his TV career in 1955 — aired Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic.

Van Dyke will turn 100 years old in December.
