Do We Need a Toy Story 5?

Feb 5, 2023

Pixar has wowed audiences with the Toy Story franchise for over three decades, but do fans need another movie with Woody and Buzz?

Pixar

Pixar has made some of the most memorable children movies like The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, and, of course, Toy Story. Andy’s toys Woody and Buzz have become one of the most beloved creations that we have seen to come to an end with Toy Story 4. However, audiences also thought that Toy Story 3 was also the end of the series, but that did not seem to stick. When it was released, Toy Story 4 perfectly wrapped up the series with an emotional send-off.

There has been no official announcement that a Toy Story 5 has been green lit for the Toy Story franchise, but the end of the fourth installment has fans convinced that Buzz’s story is unfinished. Some of the creators close to the franchise have also voiced that they would be willing to do another movie. In fact, Tim Allen has even chimed in and said he would be willing to voice Buzz again. The real question for the franchise is whether or not we need a Toy Story 5.

Buzz’s Story After Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 wrapped up Woody’s story in a nice little bow, and according to Tom Hanks, who voices Woody, there are no more plans for another film. Since Woody’s story was brought to a heartwarming ending, it makes sense that Hanks would see no reason for the franchise to continue. Screen Rant goes into detail about how Woody decided to become a lost toy at the end of the film while all the other characters are stuck in limbo.

Buzz Lightyear and the other toys return to Bonnie for a very uncertain future. The toys may still have a human that will cherish and play with them, but they are still at risk to be eventually thrown away or outgrown. If another movie were in the works, Toy Story 5 could give Buzz and the other toys a satisfying conclusion. Fans of the franchise might not see Woody come back, but it would give the possibility for Buzz’s journey to end.

If There is a Toy Story 5, It Should be the Last

Bonnie’s story is going to end up very much like Andy’s as she is going to eventually age out of her toys, according to Insider. Fans of Toy Story are a little uneasy knowing that Buzz’s journey is up in the air and ultimately might be a little dark. However, he is going to have to step up and fill in the leadership void that Woody has left behind. He will need to guide all the other toys through a final transition. As audiences saw in the first film, Buzz had no idea that he was a toy and had to embrace that fact and how he impacted children’s lives. Toy Story 5 could see a full circle to Buzz’s story as he would have to come to the realization of what happens when the kids no longer need their toys.

Pixar does not need to flirt with a dark ending like they did in Toy Story 3, which means killing off Buzz and the other toys would be unnecessary. The studio would just need to convey what retirement looks like for Buzz. Toy Story 5 could instead explore a different permanent ending for the toys that is beyond fighting for play time or becoming a lost toy. Republic World talks about how Woody delved into what happens to a toy when they are played with for the last time. If Buzz is able to answer this for himself and the other toys, it should be the last film. There is no need to continue to fight the end of this franchise when they give audiences the perfect ending.

Looper reassures fans that there has not been any concrete news or a green light for a fifth film to the franchise. Quite a few audiences say they would be okay if there was another film. Allen even said he wants to do another movie, so who else would be coming back? Joan Cusack came to the cast as Jessie in Toy Story 2, while Kristen Schaal’s Trixie came to screen in both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key also were introduced in Toy Story 4 as Bunny and Ducky, and who could forget about the fan-favorite character of Forky, voiced by Tony Hale? These are just a few members of the cast fans would hope to return if a fifth movie were to be made.

Since Toy Story 5 has not been approved by Pixar yet, there are not enough concrete plot details at this time. However, Toy Story 4 had many threads that were not concluded at the end of the film. Buzz and Woody said their goodbyes to each other, but now the toys are left without their fearless leader. The toys still have Jessie, but this might not be enough for all the other toys. Buzz and the toys still need to band together to take care of Bonnie and help her grow up. Woody and Bo-Beep also now live in a world without kids which would be an interesting storyline to dive a little deeper into. Needless to say, Pixar has plenty of material to work with if a fifth movie is to be green lit.
