Doomsday’ Casting But Doesn’t Know Much
Apr 13, 2025
Channing Tatum has finally talked about his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday, but is he actually playing Gambit? After years of trying to get a Gambit solo film off the ground, Tatum finally realized his lifelong dream of playing the iconic X-Men character in Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum’s Gambit was a scene-stealer, and many were shocked but delighted to see Tatum’s name on the Avengers: Doomsday cast list.
At Cinema Con, Tatum spoke to Extra about his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. Despite everyone assuming Tatum is playing Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, Tatum did play coy with the fact that no character names were confirmed, only the actors involved. He says he might not be playing Gambit but a different character. However, he also doesn’t deny he is playing Gambit. I’m just pointing out how nobody confirmed anything outside of the fact that he is in the movie. Tatum said:
“Personally, all I was guaranteed was a chair. They said that I have a chair, and I can at least watch the movie from the chair. You know, and it was just my name, it wasn’t exactly Gambit. So, I work in the world of just like, of binary yes or no’s, and I’ve only been guaranteed so far a chair to watch the movie in, so that’s where I’m at.”

Gambit: Channing Tatum’s X-Men Movie That Never Happened
Channing Tatum almost played the fan-favorite character Gambit in his own solo X-Men film; here is why the movie never happened.
While Tatum is right that no character names were announced and fans are just assuming the actors associated with playing X-Men characters are reprising their roles as X-Men, it is almost absolute certainty. Even if Gambit wasn’t named specifically, the X-Men team are now part of the official Avengers: Doomsday synopsis. Gambit’s return was teased in a scrapped post-credits scene for Deadpool & Wolverine, which would have seen the character in the Void seeing a sling ring portal opening up, suggesting his future adventures and something the MCU has been planning for some time.
What Exactly Do We Know About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Tatum’s comments are most likely meant to be a joke, as it seems impossible to see him playing anyone other than Gambit in his Doomsday appearance. Yet, there is still plenty that isn’t known about Avengers: Doomsday. Many wonder if Halle Berry’s comments about not being in Avengers: Doomsday are genuine or if they are an attempt to throw people off. There is still no word on whether Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the movie, or whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be similar to Ant-Man and the Wasp in providing a story that takes place during the events of the Avengers movie that precedes it. This is certainly what recent reports have suggested, and the same can be said of Doctor Strange.
With Tatum almost certainly reprising his role as Gambit, it likely means he will be fighting alongside the 20th Century Fox X-Men with whom he never got to share the screen. With James Marsden returning as Cyclops alongside Kelsey Grammer’s Beast and more, there is a good chance that the X-Men roster for Avengers: Doomsday could be modeled after the popular team in X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97. This rumor was circulating a year ago about what many assumed would be the MCU’s main “sacred timeline” X-Men film. That means we will most likely see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, Halle Berry’s Storm, and Anna Paquin’s Rogue all potentially make an appearance as well. Who knows, maybe fans will finally get to see the iconic Gambit and Rogue romance play out a little in live-action in Avengers: Doomsday after all these years.
