Drama Series Emmys 2024 Predictions And Contenders
Mar 29, 2024
In hindsight, perhaps the Television Academy’s decision to keep eight nominees for the Drama and Comedy Series categories was a mistake. The former will be fine, but the Drama Series category is something of, well, a potential embarrassment of historic proportions. Last year, was an all-timer in terms of nominees with many great series not making the cut. 2024 already has two previous also-rans, “The Morning Show” and “The Gilded Age,” as locks.

The other guaranteed nominee, and the likely frontrunner, is the final season of “The Crown.” The Netflix staple has been recognized for four of its five earlier seasons, but season six was actually the worst reviewed overall. But considering Elizabeth Debicki‘s upset win at the 2024 SAG Awards and the program’s strength in guild nominations, it is a very safe pick to win…for now. Who will join these three shows in the nominee circle is the big question mark.
“Loki” earned six nominations for its initial season, but couldn’t crack the Drama Series category. “Slow Horses” was snubbed across the board for its first two seasons. Then again, it did recently earn it’s first BAFTA Drama Series nomination. After those five, it might just be a pick’em.
“3 Body Problem” has pretty good reviews and has slowly but surely transformed into a seemingly well-watched series on Netflix (although it doesn’t seem to be a smash in the U.S.). Then there is Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” which earned strong reviews and viewership, but is it actually that well-liked? On the flip side is “The Curse” which most would consider a limited series or, at worst, anthology series, but is submitting for Drama. The Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone program is one of the best-reviewed of any of this year’s potential nominees and definitely has a passionate cult following (are they Emmy voters though?).
Oh, and we’ve still got one slot left.
The “Star Wars” spin-off “Ahsoka” has a shot as does Max’s “Tokyo Vice” for its second season. Even broadcast series such as “Law and Order: SVU” or newcomer “Will Trent” could crack the field. It’s so wide open that viewers are guaranteed a gasp or two when the Drama Series nominees are announced on July 17. Is that exciting or depressing or both? [Posted March 29]
