Drew Barrymore & Debi Mazar’s Batman Forever Characters Return in Max Series

Sep 8, 2023

Summary

Sugar and Spice, two characters from Batman Forever, make a nostalgic appearance in Harley Quinn season four. The duo shows up at the Legion of Doom’s party celebrating the death of a beloved DC hero death. Many fans will no doubt enjoy the return of these characters, played in Batman Forever by Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar.

Warning! The following contains SPOILERS for Harley Quinn season four, episode six, Metamorphosis.

Sugar and Spice and everything nice! Season four of Max’s Harley Quinn series just got even more nostalgic. The show doesn’t stray away from dipping its toes into The Dark Knight’s mythology of characters. And now, a pair of Batman Forever mainstays have been introduced nearly three decades after Drew Barrymore and Debi Mazar first portrayed them in director Joel Schumacher’s 1995 film.

Sugar and Spice are two molls who were created specifically for Batman Forever. Debi Mazar portrayed the dark-and-spicy dominating half of the pair who served as Harvey Dent/Two-Face’s (Tommy Lee Jones) companion, while Drew Barrymore played the white and sugary component of the threesome’s relationship.

More than a decade passed before the characters of Sugar and Spice would show up again in Batman: Arkham City No. 1 (2011). The pair bared little resemblance to either Barrymore or Mazar in the comic book, though, but both were still clad in their respective white and black colors.

Sugar & Spice Return in Harley Quinn
Warner Bros.

Harley Quinn season four marks the return of Sugar and Spice for the first time since appearing in the pages of Batman: Arkham City 12 years ago. However, when the duo shows up in Harley Quinn’s sixth episode titled Metamorphosis they definitely favor the actresses that made the characters household names thanks to Batman Forever.

In Metamorphosis, practically the entire Justice League assembles to mourn Nightwing’s (Harvey Guillén) death with the Bat-Family, while members of the Legion of Doom celebrate with a “Nightwing’s Dead” cake. A ton of DC characters makes cameos, including the Flash (Scott Porter) and Toyman (Tom Hollander), and even Crazy Quilt gets a shout-out (doesn’t appear, though). And then Sugar and Spice finally make an appearance near the episode’s conclusion.

Sugar and Spice show up at the Legion of Doom’s party celebrating Nightwing’s demise, walking along with Two-Face, of course, and can later be seen arm-and-arm with their favorite, evil companion. Unfortunately, neither Barrymore nor Mazar voice the villains in Harley Quinn. But, it is still a nice little nod to the Batman movies of the past, with many fans no doubt enjoying the return of the characters, even if it is only brief.

Sugar and Spice’s appearance turns out to be rather inconsequential, but the Joker (Alan Tudyk) does crash the big party at the end with some startling news: He is the one who killed Nightwing, which causes the Legion of Doom members to celebrate his big kill, and together they chant his name. Had Sugar and Spice’s roles been more substantial, and included actual lines of dialogue, who knows… maybe Barrymore and Mazar would have had a reason to reprise their roles. We will have to wait and see whether the pair have any further appearances in the series.

Harley Quinn season four is currently streaming on Max, with the next episode due to land on August 31, 2023.
