Before the 96th Academy Awards 14 women had won the Best Actress Oscar more than once. That list has now expanded by one after Emma Stone won her second trophy in the category for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.” She previously won in 2017 for “La La Land.”

As Bella Baxter, Stone portrays a young woman coming to terms with misogyny in a fantastical version of late 1800s Europe. She also won the BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and the Critics Choice Award for her performance. She also won Best Lead Performance (a shared prize with fellow nominee Sandra Hüller) from the Los Angeles Critics Association.
Stone also earned a nomination as a producer in the Best Picture category. She has earned five nominations throughout her relatively short career so far.
Besides Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), the other nominees in this category included Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Annette Bening (“Nyad”), and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).
The Scottsdale Arizona native made her feature film debut in the 2007 seminal teen comedy “Superbad.” Her other credits include “The House Bunny,” “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” “Zombieland,” “Easy A,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “The Help,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),“ “Battle of the Sexes,” “The Favourite,” and “Cruella.” Her television credits include “Maniac” and, most recently, “The Curse” opposite Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie.
After already collaborating on “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” Stone’s next film is Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness.” The pair have also made a short film, “Bleat,” and are set to film a remake of the Korean fantasy flick “Save The Green Planet” this summer. Stone is also attached to a sequel to “Cruella,” but there is currently no timeline for that project at this time.
“Poor Things” is available on Disney+, Hulu, and on digital download services.
