Every Martial Arts Movie Coming to Tubi in September 2023

Sep 3, 2023

Tubi is serving up plenty of sick kicks with their latest batch of Martial Arts films. September will see returning icons come back with even more action-packed movies, international adventures with grandiose scopes, and even some unconventional gems you might’ve skimmed over in the past. Regardless of what you pick to watch, you can expect equal amounts of punches, kicks, hacks, and slashes in these stellar martial arts movies.

This is just about every notable martial arts film hitting Tubi in the month of September. Every film will be available to watch from as early as September 1 unless stated otherwise.

Unleashed (2005)
Universal Pictures

Unleashed is what happens when you smash together Yuen Woo-ping’s choreography (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), a lead performance by Jet Li (Once Upon a Time in China), and a soundtrack by the English trip-hop group Massive Attack. Released in 2005, Unleashed sees Jet Li playing a man reduced to nothing more than an attack dog. A metal collar around his neck controls his every action. But when an opportunity to free himself from captivity presents itself, his suppressed rage will become. . . Well, unleashed.

Also featuring performances by Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, and Kerry Kondon, Unleashed is a fascinating mash-up of martial arts experience and international influences. The director of Unleashed, Louis Leterrier, would later direct 2008’s The Incredible Hulk in addition to replacing Justin Lin in 2023’s Fast X.

Red Cliff (2008)
Magnolia Pictures

Based on a true story, this two-part epic was John Woo’s first Chinese production since the release of his magnum opus, Hard Boiled. Red Cliff reinterprets the events of the Battle of Red Cliffs for the big screen, showcasing what would be the penultimate conflict that preceded the legendary Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. While the original film was split into two parts that total over four hours in length, the abridged international version will be heading to Tubi on September 8.

If you’re looking for a terrific wuxia film, you really can’t go wrong with Red Cliff. It’s John Woo’s take on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, loaded with some incredible production values and a terrific ensemble cast. This critically acclaimed martial arts epic will leave you breathless once it’s all over.

Beverly Hills Ninja (1997)
Sony Pictures Releasing

Is Beverly Hills Ninja as cheesy as the title suggests? A little bit, sure. Despite this, there are a surprising number of positive qualities to be found in this Chris Farley action-comedy. That’s right, one of Farley’s last roles in his brief filmography was in Beverly Hills Ninja, where he plays an orphaned boy named Haru.

Abandoned by his family, he’s taken in by a clan of ninjas, where his kind spirit and perseverance overcome his lack of ninja skills. When it comes time for him to rescue someone he loves, he’ll be put to the test as he patrols the streets of Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills Ninja is a martial arts film that leans more into the comedic side of the genre, with Farley’s charisma carrying the adventure throughout its brisk runtime.

Iron Protector (2016)
Well Go USA Entertainment

A holdover from August, Iron Protector will remain available on Tubi throughout September. A true auteur martial arts flick, Iron Protector sees Yue Song directing, writing, and starring in a high-stakes kung fu film. A tribute to the wild days of the martial arts genre, we follow Yue Song as he takes on hundreds of mobsters in a prolonged gang war, all while trying to defend a prominent family’s daughter from their clutches.

Is it a martial arts film that’ll make you think? Absolutely not, but it’s not trying to do that. Instead, it opts to craft an over-the-top story that escalates to ludicrous extremes. There’s a sincere effort to make something entertaining, and as long as you accept that it’ll be a little silly, you’ll walk away thoroughly entertained.

Hand of Death (1976)
Golden Harvest

Before Hard Boiled, John Woo cut his teeth on a variety of martial arts films throughout the 1970s. But if we had to pick just one, it’d be Hand of Death. Originally released in 1976, Hand of Death sees Doran Tan and James Tien co-starring as our protagonist and antagonist, respectively, as Shaolin disciples are targeted during the Qing Dynasty. To survive the onslaught, Doran Tan is enlisted to take down James Tien with the help of a young Jackie Chan at his side.

Hand of Death is an intriguing stepping stone for John Woo, as it would be his sophomore directorial effort. It’s a classic film that may not necessarily be lumped in with other greats from the time. Despite this, it’s still a martial arts film well worth your time.

All these and more will be available on Tubi for the month of September, joining the streamer’s staggering amount of martial arts movies on offer. Just be sure to watch them while you can, as they may not be around for long.
