Everything Everywhere All At Once Tops 2023 PGA Awards

Apr 11, 2023

Braving the rain and cold, many of Los Angeles’ biggest names headed to the Beverly Hilton for the 2023 PGA Awards. One of the few guild honors this season where a potential strike wasn’t the biggest topic of conversation. And, following The Daniels’ win at the DGA Awards a week ago, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” solidified its claim as the Best Picture winner frontrunner taking the PGA Awards top prize, Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Since the PGA Awards went to 10 nominees and a ranked voting system comparable to the Oscars in 2010, 10 of the last 12 PGA Award winners have gone on to win Best Picture. “1917” and “The Big Short” are the only PGA champs not to pull off that feat. And, notably, both “12 Years A Slave” and “Gravity” tied for the PGA in 2014.
Despite losing the BAFTA Award for Best Film to “All Quiet on the Western Front” (not nominated by the Producers Guild membership), A24’s indie darling can arguably lock up the Best Picture race by taking the SAG Award for Best Cast in a Motion Picture on Sunday night. The last film to win all three guild honors was “Parasite” in 2020.
As expected “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” took the Animated Feature honor. Also repeating a BAFTA win was “Navalny” which took the Documentary Producer award.
On the television side, “The White Lotus” took the Episodic Drama award while “The Bear” surprised winning the Comedy Series humor. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the Live Entertainment, Variety, Sketch, Standup & Talk Television award. “Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls” followed up its Emmy win with the PGA for Outstanding Reality Competition TV Series. The Non-Fiction Television honor went to the now-canceled “Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy.” Shot in just 18 days, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” won the Motion Picture for Television award. “The Dropout” took the Limited Series award.
Mindy Kaling received the Norman Lear Achievement in Television (introduced hilariously by B.J. Novak). The PGA Milestone award went to Michael De Luca and Pamela Addy (introduced by Ron Howard). “Till” was honored with the Stanley Kramer Award. The legendary former head of Paramount Pictures, Sherry Lansing, presented the David O. Selznick Award to Tom Cruise for theatrical producing.
Three awards were announced the week before the ceremony. “Sesame Street” took Outstanding Children’s Program, “Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off” won the Outstanding Sports Program honor, and “Only Murders In The Building: One Killer Question” took the Outstanding Short-Form Award.
