Exclusive: Jon Voight and Sean McNamara Talk the Making of Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders

Dec 13, 2022

A family reunion at a mansion on a remote island turns deadly when the guests are locked inside and forced to play a survival game, with only one guest assured to come out alive. Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders is a horror-thriller that injects comedy into its dialogue to keep viewers engaged and entertained.

It stars Jon Voight, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Will Sasso, Laura Mennell, Megan Charpentier, Kaya Coleman, Skyler Shaye, Dylan Playfair, and Bradley Stryker. It’s written by Brian Buccellato and directed by Sean McNamara.

“I think it’s a fun ride,” commented Voight, “it’s for everybody, and especially this time of the year, people are looking for this kind of film. I’m excited for many people to see it with audiences in a theater.”

“I just love a great thriller… I think a lot of audiences will relate to this. They’ve gone to reunions, they don’t really want to be there, but they have to for family. Sometimes it gets bad or little arguments will go on, but this gets far more intense. I think people will enjoy just being a part of that,” added McNamara.

Dangerous Game and Family Legacy

Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders deals a lot with family dynamics in its premise, with the addition of the way that the characters are motivated and influenced. “I realized why he did this film,” said Voight, referring to McNamara, “he hates family reunions,” he laughed. “He knows every aspect, and he put it all in this film. This is how he really feels about all of his relatives.”

Voight continued, “I mean, the legacy here, it’s a whodunit… it’s a family reunion, but it has to do with murders. In the first part, you see a family get together, and then you start seeing this subterranean indication that there’s something really dangerous and wrong here. Then it starts to explode. It’s a real journey. I didn’t want to do this movie initially because I was a little scared of it,” he joked,” but Sean convinced me. Sean McNamara is a director that I’ve worked with several times, and we have a lot of fun.”

“When it comes back to the legacy murders, everybody normally thinks, ‘What’s my legacy? What is the proudest moment that I can share with the world?’ And I think this is a different version of that. I think what other people might want to share with the world, is not the same as what happens in this movie,” commented McNamara.

Filming Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders on a Remote Island

Paramount Pictures

The remote island that the film is shot on adds a layer of isolation to the characters, helping to raise the stakes and reinforce the grave danger that they’re all in. Not only are they locked in a mansion, but even if they escaped, they would have to overcome being far away from the rest of the world.

“Sean is very good at jumping around and going to all of these places and figuring out how you do this piece, how you find an island with this bizarre kind of structure, this mansion, and all of these things that were written down. They found a way to piece it together and make it real because once it becomes real, it’s real for us [actors]… After a while… you get the feeling this whole thing is alive, and then all of the danger and all of the scary aspects really hit you hard in the making of the film too… the whole thing comes to life. It’s all because of Sean McNamara, this madman, there’s this vision for it… I was very sick. I saw this whole side of him I’ve never seen before,” Voight said jokingly.

“I love the fact that we had people come in from planes and helicopters and boats because what it shows is they can’t get off easily. If you’re ever in a family reunion, you just got to get the hell out of there. You jump in the car and you’re gone. Where with this, they’re stuck with each other for the weekend. I love that aspect. They just can’t get away from each other. They have to deal with each other, and they have to deal with this situation, and it deteriorates from the moment they get there,” added McNamara.
