‘Feta Girl’ is the Latest DCU Casualty, According to Nia Vardalos
Mar 9, 2023
It might be cheesy, but My Big Fat Greek Wedding writer and actress Nia Vardalos is the latest star to crack jokes about the ongoing delays and cancelations at DC.
Just days after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to social media to confirm that future Black Adam projects had been shelved indefinitely, Vardalos shared her own solemn post to Instagram Thursday, “announcing” that her fictional superhero Feta Girl had also fallen victim to the studio’s constant changes.
“After a free and long lunch with Mr. Safran and Mr. Gunn, I’m sad to announce that my character Feta Girl will not be appearing in the next DC chapters,” the Greek-Canadian actress wrote, referring to DC execs Peter Safran and James Gunn.

“We can mourn together, but let’s remember that we will always have cheese,” she added.

Gunn Defends Delay and Cancelation Decisions: That’s Just How the Feta Crumbles
DC Studios / DC Comics
Though many of the changes that Gunn and Safran have made while mapping out the future of the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) have been thoroughly unpopular with fans, the duo is standing firm in their decisions.
Growing tired of the verbal and virtual assaults they had been receiving en masse, Gunn turned to Twitter to address the rabid fans with grace and make it abundantly clear that the creative choices were final—no matter how much of a stink fans (of Feta Girl or otherwise) made.
“Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story & best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. Perhaps these choices are great, perhaps not, but they are made with sincere hearts & integrity & always with the story in mind.
No one loves to be harassed or called names—but, to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions. We were aware there would be a period of turbulence when we took this gig, & we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult & not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us. But this means little to us in comparison to our jobs as artists & custodians in helping to create a wide & wonderful future for DC.”
Feta Girl might not have an immediate future in the DCU, but with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 on the horizon, who’s to say Vardalos’ Toula couldn’t discover a curious cheese-related talent?
If you’re eagerly awaiting a DCU-MBFGWU crossover…well, you might not want to hold your breath—but you can get your fill of feel-good romance with the first two My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, now streaming on HBO Max.
