Finn Wolfhard and Jodie Foster Both Voiced Pugsley Addams Decades Apart

Jul 1, 2024

Summary

Jodie Foster and Finn Wolfhard both voiced Pugsley Addams in different time periods.
Foster voiced Pugsley in the 1972 made-for-TV movie Scooby-Doo Meets The Addams Family, while Wolfhard portrayed the character in the 2019 animated film.
Finn Wolfhard has lent his voice to numerous projects with more on the way, while Foster has very few voice acting credits to her name.

When a franchise becomes a staple, spanning several decades and finding appeal with different generations, it can start to draw interesting parallels. To name but a few, Batman, Transformers, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have people playing live-action and animated versions of the characters, tying different actors to their iconic roles. If someone mentions “that Batman actor,” you are as likely to get someone to respond Adam West as you would another saying Michael Keaton.

While the character for which Jodie Foster and Finn Wolfhard share a voice acting credit may not be as iconic as the previously mentioned ‘Caped Crusader,’ they both lent their voices to a particular mischievous kid early in their careers. We will look at the unlikely voice acting credit that Finn Wolfhard and Jodie Foster share, decades apart from one another.

Finn Wolfhard and Jodie Foster’s Voiceacting Work

Jodie Foster has been a long-time industry staple, starting at a young age working for Disney, with one of her first features coming from Napoleon and Samantha when she was just 9 years old.

Still, her career would be defined by her later roles in critically acclaimed films such as Taxi Driver, The Accused, and The Silence of the Lambs. Jodie Foster has never been known for her voice acting, for a good reason: she is not a voice actor.

One of her longest projects came from the questionable and short-lived The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan while she was a child actor, and her most recent was a guest appearance on The Simpsons in 2009, marking a 35+ year gap with only two other voice acting credits in between.

Finn Wolfhard, best known for his roles in Stranger Things, Ghostbusters, and It, has taken more of a liking to voice acting work despite the challenges he said it first presented. Wolfhard has been involved in everything from voicing “Player” in the Carmen San Diego Netflix series to offering his talents as Candlewick in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Wolfhard also has future voice-acting roles, including a prominent role in the upcoming animated series NEW-GEN, based on a Marvel comic series. The young actor seems posed to make voice acting a large part of his repertoire going forward.

Finn Wolfhard and Jodie Foster Both Have Voiced Pugsley Addams

With Jodie Foster only having a few voice-acting roles and Finn Wolfhard set on becoming a prominent actor, it is quite a coincidence that the two would share the same credit with such a large game between the two performances. However, both have played Pugsley from the iconic dark and comedic The Addams Family. Jodie Foster voiced the mischievous danger-seeker at the age of ten, and Finn Wolfhard tackled Pugsley at the age of sixteen.

The Addams Family (2019) followed the titular family, finding an idle but happy life in New Jersey in an abandoned asylum, having their peace interrupted when Wednesday decides she is interested in attending public school. At the same time, the family prepares for Pugsley’s coming-of-age Mazurka ceremony, unaware that the town mayor is plotting against the family to get them to leave so they can buy the land the Addams are occupying.

Filling out the rest of the family alongside Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley was Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, and Snoop Dogg as Cousin It. While much of the cast would carry over to the sequel, The Addams Family 2 in 2021, Wolfhard would not return, cited as aging out of the role, with Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton voicing the character.

Jodie Foster first voiced Pugsley in the 1972 made-for-TV movie Scooby-Doo Meets The Addams Family and would return to the character for 16 episodes in the short-lived Hanna-Barbera’s The Addams Family(1973).

The show’s format took the spooky and kooky family on the road as they traveled the world in their RV shaped like a haunted mansion, visiting various locations and running into different characters. Despite being well-received, including accompanying merchandise, the show only lasted for one season.

While the voice actors of Pugsley and Wednesday were new to The Addams Family, the show brought back some of the cast from the hit 1964 live-action TV series, including Jackie Coogan as Uncle Fester and Ted Cassidy as Lurch. They were joined by voice-actor staples Lennie Weinrib as Gomez and Janet Waldo (iconic with her performances of Judy Jetson, and Josie from Josie and the Pussycats) as Morticia.

While the two roles are vastly removed in both time and format, with Finn Wolfhard working with the Hollywood studio system with other famous actors and Jodie Foster working with a beloved studio focused on TV animation, it is still fascinating to hear each tackle the role, even if they are one of many to play the morbid, adventure seeking, kid.

How to Watch Finn Wolfhard and Jodie Foster as Pugsley Addams

Unfortunately, one of these versions is easier to find than the other. You can stream The Addams Family (2019) on Paramount+ (which also houses the classic 1991 live-action film). The classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon will be a bit more difficult to track down. Currently, the only option is to rent The Addams Family (1973) on Google Play. Thankfully, with YouTube, if you want to hear how each young actor tackled the role, plenty of clips are available of both.
