HOLLYSHORTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024 REVIEW! Wendi Tang’s Fishtank looks at recovery from a different perspective…which, quite frankly, short films should do. Jules (Tiffany Chu) is one year sober, and since that time, she has been infrequently vomiting goldfish—like real goldfish. Finding sympathy for the new life she has created, Jules’ apartment is strewn with fish tanks—homes for her new friends.
Jules meets fish enthusiast Matt (Isaac Jay) during her most recent AA meeting. After the meeting, Jules invites Matt to her apartment, and he notes that Jules is not only barfing up plain old goldfish but also hurling up rare breeds of them. Enamored by her collection, Matt and Jules begin a relationship.
“…not only barfing up plain old goldfish but also hurling up rare breeds…”
As you can see, Fishtank is a very weird story about recovery, which is why they tell you to be very wary about entering relationships—especially with other members of your group meeting. In the background of Jules’ growing fish population, Jules is trying to get a hold of her feelings. As her relationship with Matt blossoms, Jules’ need to vomit subsides, which has ramifications for the couple.
Story aside, the world that writer/director Tang created in Jules’ apartment is fascinating. With wall-to-wall aquariums and fishbowls, Tang manages to fill the room with fish in a weirdly organic way that serves the story perfectly. Each shot and angle is art, leading to a visually stunning crescendo.
Fishtank is a beautifully bizarre exploration of recovery, blending surreal elements with an emotional journey. Wendi Tang’s creative storytelling and visually stunning set design make this short film an unforgettable experience. The unique premise and compelling visuals come together to create a thought-provoking and artistically rich story about healing and connection.
Fishtank screened at the 2024 Hollyshorts Film Festival.
