Frank Darabont Retired From Directing Because “Content Now Is Filled With Horrible People”

Oct 1, 2024

Even though his career has spanned decades, Frank Darabont only directed four feature films. And since 2013, the filmmaker has retired from the business. But now, it appears Darabont has decided to un-retire because he gets a chance to work on Netflix’s iconic series, “Stranger Things.” So, why did he decide to come out of retirement for “Stranger Things?” Well, in a new interview with The Daily Beast, he comes clean about his choice.

In the interview, Darabont explained that his decision to direct episodes of “Stranger Things” Season 5 came about because he and his wife love the show. Apparently, “Stranger Things” has something that a lot of content today doesn’t—heart.
“What really dragged me out of retirement was that my wife and I really love [‘Stranger Things’],” Darabont said. “Our content now is so filled with horrible people doing horrible things for greedy reasons but ‘Stranger Things’ has so much heart. That positivity is something I really responded to.”
Darabont wouldn’t be the first person to talk about how art nowadays has been reduced to “content” and so much of it is made for monetary gain. However, it is a bit of a bummer the filmmaker isn’t willing to work on his own projects anymore either.
As for whether or not he will stay un-retired, Darabont is unsure.

“Who knows?” said the filmmaker. “I haven’t missed the business but I have missed being on set with creative people… It may well be one and done, but we’ve still got time.”
Darabont is best known for being the director of films such as “Shawshank Redemption,” “The Green Mile,” and “The Mist.” The latter of which having one of the darkest endings to any horror film of the past decade or so.
His work on “Stranger Things” won’t be seen until next year however, when Season 5 (the final one) arrives on Netflix.
