Breaking Down The 2025 Oscar Nominations

Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist & Wicked Lead

In terms of total nominations, Emilia Pérez leads the way with 13 nominations, including Karla Sofía Gascón for Best Actress, making history as the first openly transgender actor ever nominated for an Academy Award. In second place, The Brutalist and Wicked tied with 10 nominations each. If total nominations are indicative of which film will win Best Picture, which they sometimes are, Netflix’s controversial crime musical is the clear frontrunner to take home the top prize, but The Brutalist should pose a serious threat.

Emilia Pérez Looks Like Netflix’s Best Shot At Finally Winning Best Picture After 10 Years

The 97th Academy Awards have given Emilia Pérez thirteen nominations, including Best Picture, which means Netflix might finally earn that Oscar.

For Best Actor, Adrien Brody seems like the frontrunner to win his second Academy Award for The Brutalist, but Timothée Chalamet could provide some tough competition for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) seems to be the favorite in the Supporting Actor race, though he will have to beat out his former Succession co-star Jeremy Strong for The Apprentice. Meanwhile, the Supporting Actress category seems to be shaping up as a showdown between Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Ariana Grande (Wicked).
Our Take On The 2025 Oscar Nominations

Was Anyone Snubbed?

Custom Image by Cooper Hood

The polarizing Emilia Pérez receiving the most nominations is sure to be controversial, especially if it ends up winning Best Picture. However, The Brutalist – a monumental American epic – and Wicked – harkening back to the golden age of Hollywood musicals – receiving the second most nominations seems well deserved. However, one of the biggest snubs was, once again, director Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two, who helmed a spectacular sci-fi spectacle that otherwise received five nominations, including Best Picture.
While there are plenty more snubs that could be mentioned, as almost everyone has their pet film they’d like to see nominated, the Academy has recognized some outstanding movies this year, including Anora, Nickel Boys, and a full-on body horror film in The Substance. Now, all that’s left to do is wait and see who takes home Oscar gold on March 2.

The 97th Academy Awards will air on March 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
