Ghost Conclusion Teases Future Franchise Expansions
Oct 8, 2024
The series finale of Power Book II: Ghost titled “Ghost in the Machine,” aired on Friday, Oct. 4 on Starz, marking the end of the hit crime drama series after four seasons. However, the episode suggests that the Power universe may not be over for Tariq St. Patrick (played by Michael Rainey Jr.), as he receives a mysterious phone call hinting at future storylines—though even Rainey admits he’s unsure what this pivotal moment truly signifies.
The series’ conclusion teases at the potential continuation of Tariq’s journey as he takes control of New York City’s drug operation. In a post-credits scene, Tariq receives an unexpected phone call and offers his help to the curious caller, suggesting his story is far from over. Speaking to PEOPLE about the moment, Rainey said:
“I was kind of confused when I read that. I was like, ‘Who the hell is this dude talking to? How do you got new people already?’ Bro, everybody is against you. I’m still like, ‘Who was he talking to?’ I don’t know.”
Fans suspect the phone points to a potential collaboration between Tariq and Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), the lead of Power Book IV: Force, with Rainey telling PEOPLE, “That could be a possibility. I mean, they’re family.” Tariq and Tommy had a tense relationship due to past events involving Tariq’s father, Ghost, in the original Power series, but their issues were seemingly resolved in the third season of Power Book II: Ghost. The possibility of Tommy teaming up with Tariq could launch a fresh narrative within the Power-verse.
Is Michael Rainey Jr. Saying Goodbye to Tariq St. Patrick?
In the original Power series, Tariq evolves from a troubled teenager into a key player in his father James “Ghost” St. Patrick’s criminal empire. In a shocking climax, Tariq shoots and kills Ghost. The plot twist paves the way for Tariq’s journey in Power Book II, where he follows in his father’s footsteps. While his story may be ending in this series, Rainey isn’t saying goodbye to the character entirely, explaining to PEOPLE:
“However that happens — whether it is a little baby picture in Origins — I’m happy to bring Tariq to the screen for the people. So however that may be [possible]. “The [Power] universe, our universe never ends. We got Origins coming, we got… It never ends.”
Throughout its run, Power Book II: Ghost showcased a stellar ensemble cast, featuring R&B superstar Mary J. Blige, hip-hop icon Method Man, Michael Ealy and Larenz Tate. Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson co-starred in the original series and served as producer with Power creator Courtney A. Kemp. The show aired for six seasons on the Starz network from 2014 to 2020. The franchise continues with existing and upcoming spin-offs, including a new series, Origin, which will focus on younger versions of Ghost and Tommy.
