Home SR Originals Glass Onion Rotten Tomatoes Beats Rian Johnson Average (But Not Knives Out)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story has a better Rotten Tomatoes score than Rian Johnson’s average reviews, but doesn’t quite beat the first Knives Out.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has super positive reviews and a Fresh rating in Rotten Tomatoes, but its score isn’t quite as good as the first Knives Out. Rian Johnson’s movies have all gotten Fresh scores in Rotten Tomatoes, so Glass Onion extends that streak, but how does its review score compare to the rest of Johnson’s filmography?
After the huge success of the first Knives Out, Netflix spent $450 million to acquire the exclusive rights to two sequels directed by Johnson. If reviews are any indication, Rian Johnson made good on the streamer’s investment, delivering another solid whodunit with a star-studded cast. Even if its Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t quite measure up to the first movie, it’s still a big critical success by Netlix’s standards and compared to other most of the other movies directed by Johnson.

Knives Out Still Has Better Rotten Tomatoes Scores Than Glass Onion
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery currently has a stellar 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, which shouldn’t be considered a disappointment under any circumstances, but it does fall four points below the 97 percent score of the first movie. The difference is even more severe with Rotten Tomatoes’ “Top Critics,” who gave Glass Onion an 89 percent score, 10 points lower than Knives Out’s 99 percent. Despite these mild critic splits, Glass Onion’s Rotten Tomatoes audience score is far more in-line with the original, with user-reviews giving it an 89 percent Fresh score compared to the 90 percent audience score from the first.
Glass Onion’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Beats Rian Johnson’s Average
Despite earning a slightly lower score than Knives Out, reviews for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery have earned it a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, beating Rian Johnson’s 87 percent average by six points. Its 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes Top Critic score also beats Johnson’s 87 percent average Top Critic score by two points, and its 89 percent audience score beats Johnson’s 76 percent audience score by 13 points. Out of the five movies directed by Johnson, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is tied with Looper for Johnson’s second-best Rotten Tomatoes score behind Knives Out.
Rian Johnson has an impressive filmography and has never seen a Rotten review score, with his 87 percent average even beating out legendary directors like Steven Spielberg, whose Rotten Tomatoes average is 80 percent. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery may not be quite as positively reviewed as the original Knives Out, but it’s another worthy addition to Johnson’s filmography and a good sign for the future of the Knives Out franchise on Netflix.
