Good Omens Season 2: The Crazy Ending, Explained

Nov 30, 2023

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Good Omens is one of the most unique shows out today — which isn’t at all surprising considering the show is based on Neil Gaiman and Sir Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name. The show’s second season built off of the incredibly strong debut season, as Aziraphale and Crowley get into even more mischief, and chaos abounds.

If you’ve finished watching Good Omens season two, you might have a couple of questions about what went down. Here’s a thorough breakdown of what happened during the season finale of the second season of Good Omens.

Is Good Omens Season 2 Still Based on the Book?

The first season of the show covered the events of the first book, and so there was no more published material. However, Neil Gaiman has explicitly stated that the second season of the show is based on a sequel that Gaiman and Pratchett had plotted out, before Terry’s sad passing in 2015. Gaiman highlights that he used “bits of the sequel” for the show, as they had a general idea about where they wanted to take the story next.

The show picks up where the first season ended, as Aziraphale and Crowley have both been shunned and now act as independent agents in the mortal world. Things are uneventful for a couple of years until one day, Gabriel just suddenly shows up in Aziraphale’s bookstore completely naked with his memories wiped. Things become even more complicated when they realize that Hell is also after Gabriel.

Despite their history with Gabriel, Aziraphale and Crowley end up deciding to help the fallen angel. The two keep Gabriel hidden from the forces of Heaven and Hell, while trying to figure out why the Supreme Archangel is on earth and why he lost his memories.

They eventually discover that the reason why this is all happening is that the Supreme Archangel refused to start Armageddon 2. For his transgressions, Gabriel was put on trial for treason and consequently demoted to the lowest rank of Heaven. While they also considered sending Gabriel to Hell, they thought this would send the wrong message, as they already lost Lucifer to hell and wouldn’t want another incident.

This is why the heavenly hosts decided to also wipe Gabriel’s memories. Rebelling against the results of the trial, the former Archangel decides to run away. He writes a message on a piece of cardboard, and takes an elevator down to Earth, and ends up in Aziraphale’s bookstore.

Things eventually come to a head when the forces of Hell attack Aziraphale’s bookstore. To fend them off, Aziraphale opts to blow up his halo. While this does help keep them at bay, destroying one’s halo is seen as an act of war. Because of this, the leaders of both Heaven and Hell convene in Aziraphale’s bookstore to kick off Armageddon 2. This is when Crowley discovers the message that Gabriel had written on the piece of cardboard: “It’s in the fly.”

The Lord of the Flies Beelzebub steps in and reveals that Gabriel had hidden his memories in the fly before taking the elevator down to heaven. It’s also revealed that the fly was actually gifted to Gabriel by Beelzebub, as the two had developed a romantic relationship after the events of show’s first season.

After the first failed Armageddon, Gabriel and Beelzebub started secretly meeting up regularly to discuss the affairs of Heaven and Hell. Because of their romantic involvement, the two conspired to keep Armageddon at bay for the rest of eternity, so they would never have to meet each other on the battlefield. Once Gabriel regains his memories, he and Beelzebub decide to abandon their posts and start a new life on Alpha Centauri. Armageddon is consequently called off and the end of the world is averted once again.

What’s Next for Aziraphale and Crowley?

With the position of Supreme Archangel effectively vacated, Metatron offers the position to Aziraphale. As a bonus, he would even be able to restore Crowley’s angelic status so they can live together in Heaven. Aziraphale is ecstatic as he believes that he can change the world for the better. This all seems great at first — but Crowley rejects the offer. He reminds Aziraphale that Heaven is no different from Hell, as they both just want to push their own agendas no matter the cost.

As a last ditch attempt to get Aziraphale to stay, Crowley confesses his love for him. Crowley begs him to stay on Earth so they can spend eternity together. Aziraphale is beyond convincing as he sees this opportunity as a chance to do some actual good in the world. Knowing that the angel can no longer be convinced, Crowley kisses Aziraphale and parts ways with the love of his life.

Despite the show ending on this massive cliffhanger, a third season has yet to be confirmed. However, the chances of a renewal are pretty good considering how well the show has been doing. While Gaiman has been mum about the potential plot of season 3, there are a couple of popular theories about what could happen in the third season of Good Omens. No matter what direction the show opts to go in, it will surely be great to see what happens next with Aziraphale and Crowley.
