Green Lantern DCU Series Gets a Hugely Exciting Update from James Gunn

May 31, 2024

Summary

The
Green Lantern
series in the revamped DC Universe will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart with a “crack team of writers.”
Creator James Gunn describes the new series as “almost like
True Detective
” with space cops watching over Precinct Earth.
Nathan Fillion will play Guy Gardner in the new DC Universe, who is described as “90% flawed.”

Among the many new projects under James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe is the long-awaited Green Lantern series, which has finally found its writers. The show was announced in 2023 as part of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ phase of the new DCU, alongside various other shows, including, Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2, Waller, and Paradise Lost. News regarding the Lanterns series’ production has been quiet since the announcement. However, James Gunn recently took to Instagram to give fans some good news about the project.

Following stories that the series has finally finding writers, Gunn confirmed the reports, stating that DC Comics writer Tom King, Lost creator Damon Lindelof, and Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy have produced a pilot script, and that the series is putting together a strong writer’s room. Gunn said:

“Yes, it’s true. The ‘Lanterns’ DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King and Damon Lindelof. A hearty welcome to Chris and [Damon] as they join the DC Studios family (no welcome necessary for old [Tom], who has been here nearly since inception).”

During the show’s debut announcement in 2023, Gunn described the new series as a “terestrial based story” before comparing the new series to one of the most-popular detective series of all-time. Gunn continued:

“[Lanterns] is almost like
True Detective
, with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops, watching over Precinct Earth.”

Lanterns Focuses on Hal Jordan and John Stewart

In the original announcement video, Gunn also confirmed that the Lanterns series will primarily focus on Hal Jordan, and John Stewart, with “a few other Lanterns peppered in there.” DC movies fans will already know Hal Jordan from his central role in the critically panned 2011 Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds in the leading role. Fans of the comics will also likely know John Stewart. However, the character has yet to make his big screen debut. Stewart is described as one of the finest Green Lanterns to ever hail from Earth. Formerly an architect and a Marine, Stewart quickly rose through the ranks, from Earth’s back-up Lantern under Jordan, to the leader of the Green Lantern Corps.

None of the roles have been cast yet. However, the new DC Universe has already got a Green Lantern, in the form of Guy Gardner, who will be played by long-time Gunn collaborator Nathan Fillion. Gardner will have a supporting role in Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, which stars David Corenswet in the titular role. In a recent interview with Collider, Fillion described his version of Guy Gardner in the upcoming project, calling him “90% flawed.” The actor said his flaws are what make the character so interesting, continuing:

“It’s what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is. We all have our own. We witness it in other people. Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.”

There is currently no set release window for
Lanterns
. The next project in James Gunn’s DC Universe is
Superman
, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2024.
