Halloween Horror Nights Maze Review (HHN33)

Sep 6, 2024

HHN33 is here and it was my first ever Halloween Horror Nights experience, it was nothing short of spectacular but which mazes were the best? Here are our favourites out of the Halloween Horror nights mazes!

From epic scare zones to IP and original themed mazes HHN certainly hit home for me this year and I managed to experience it with zero queues as new for 2024 Universal Orlando introduced the premium scream pass which was a lifesaver.
Consisting of reduced capacity, unlimited food and soft drinks and the full HHN line-up the event was a resounding success with us being able to do the mazes multiple times and pig out on every single meal offering at the park!
Five scare mazes to explore where the actors entirely focused on you due to lower capacity and we got to soak up every inch of these world-class mazes that were packed full of actors.
With 10 mazes at this year’s event let’s dive straight into my rankings but keep in mind even the ‘worst’ maze in this list is still above and beyond what many events around the world are even capable of.
It’s crazy that the event’s worst maze would easily be one of the best if picked up and dropped at any other event. Halloween Horror Nights is the pinnacle horror event of any horror fan calendar.
10. Triplets of Terror

You’re invited to the Barmy triplets’ birthday bash. But beware, they celebrate by recreating their family’s murders. Prepare for a gory gathering.
A solid storyline that had a lot of potential but most of the scares in Triplets of Terror involved actors sitting down at chairs, standing in random places and not really interacting with guests in a way that was typical of the other mazes.
The house facade entering the maze certainly opens up an exciting introduction to the walkthrough but sadly Triplets of Terror was more Triplets of Never as I never got one single scare from this maze I was admiring the set design and the story.
Some bits of the story had some great continuity throughout as the triplets recreate their first kill, and a cake that goes missing in one room in the start reappears in the murder recreation at the end, it’s things like that which tells me the creators do care about how the storylines are portrayed throughout their mazes and that’s great to see.
Triplets of Terror was a great little maze to walk around and tour with the lights on but I enjoyed that more than its show time run and this maze is already winding people up online with a certain canine that falls victim to one of the triplets.
RIP doggy.
9. Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America

The whole reason this Latin American-themed maze was in Orlando this year was because it won the best house in 2023 at Universal Studios Hollywood.
It’s safe to say that when it arrived in Orlando we must have received a watered-down version because this particular maze was one of the weakest of the entire event.
I walked through the entire maze and didn’t flinch once, it had a great atmosphere but nothing was gelling with the flow of the maze. It’s a real shame because I’m almost positive it couldn’t have been this poor in Hollywood unless the line-up that year was truly terrible.
Sadly the winner of last year’s Hollywood event was very much a loser in this particular line-up but like I said previously, it doesn’t matter if these mazes are last on the list because if you picked them up and put them anywhere else in the world they would be the strongest mazes there.
8. The Museum: Deadly Exhibits

With an incredible facade before entering the maze and a wonderful storyline to go with it, there was a lot of expectation for The Museum: Deadly Exhibits and sadly whilst the museum looked amazing the scares just didn’t hit home.
For the most part the scares of The Museum: Deadly Exhibits were already standing in front of you the entire time but there were some clever jump scares including two characters in morphsuits blending with their surroundings in addition to a character in camo netting which delivered one hell of a scare.
The Museum: Deadly Exhibits along with Slaughter Sinema 2 and Triplets of Terror were all part of a separate 3 hour behind the scenes HHN tour that I did and seeing all the details up close was quite something but even walking around it in the day you could see that there weren’t too many ‘boo holes’ and the maze compared to others was quite weak in terms of scare factor.
7. Major Sweets Candy Factory

Whilst I thought the detailing of Major Sweets was incredible I just didn’t get many jump scares during my multiple run-throughs in this one.
It looks great but there were just no impact scares of note that stood out for me so it certainly felt like a tour of a very unique and well-themed maze as opposed to experiencing the maze itself.
I love the idea of the maze revolving around an evil candymaker who turned the town’s children into crazy killers and I love that it was originally a scare zone back in 2022 but with a now expanded storyline.
Whilst it had its charm visually, sadly it just didn’t hit home for me in the scares department.
6. Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines

Eternal Bloodlines was the IP maze I was most excited to do and whilst it contained all of the incredible visuals and characters from the epic Universal Monsters IP this maze was certainly a more story-led adventure than it was a scare maze.
With audio narration throughout the maze the exploration that this maze allowed was wonderful, you were along on the journey of discovery documenting the battle and the trials and tribulations of this quest.
It was good fun but once again it was certainly a more tame maze than the others that I have ranked higher, there was a giant gulf between Insidious and this one and sadly Eternal Bloodlines just didn’t live up to the hype I had placed on it originally.
5. Insidious: The Further

Insidious has jumped straight to the top of HHN’s scariest maze for 2024 by many fans but for me, it was OKAY!
I certainly didn’t jump every second but I think the suspense of the movie was recreated quite accurately within the space as you come face to face with many creatures from the films.
Lavishly decorated as you step into The Further I certainly felt immersed in the experience but for me, it just wasn’t as intense as the other mazes during the three run-throughs we had on that evening.
Bare in mind that everyone’s run-throughs are going to be different but for me, only one scene hit home as 4 actors were in one room and your senses were being assaulted with an onslaught of jump scares, that scene hit home but aside from I was admiring the set pieces more than jumping out of my skin.
I’m not a huge fan of Insidious so that might be why I didn’t connect too much to the maze I appreciated it for what it was but certainly felt as though this one was overhyped but maybe I’m just the odd one out as everyone else seems to love it!
4. Slaughter Sinema 2

Slaughter Sinema 2 is an incredible maze to this year’s HHN line-up which consists of a themed corridor full of one B-movie poster before you step into an iconic scene of that particular movie.
From Cyborg zombies to Mummy strippers Slaughter Sinema 2 has it all with immersive sets and some incredible genres of B movie goodness to indulge in.
Slaughter Sinema 2 felt like 10 mazes in one, and each scene was as funny as it was scary. Being chased by ghoulish Christmas goblins one minute to giant cyborg creatures the next it was an absolute riot and was certainly one of the strongest original IP mazes at Halloween Horror Nights in 2024.
Hats off to all the actors within the mazes who turned smaller broken-up scenes into their own and commanded their space, each room felt more claustrophobic only containing one scene and they delivered in the scares department! Up close and personal it was genuinely terrifying!
3. Goblin’s Feast

For me, Goblin’s Feast and the maze I’ve listed as number 4 in this article could easily be swapped at a moment’s notice.
From a beautiful facade, Goblin’s Feast consisted of some interior design genius, created inside a giant tent but the second you go inside you are instantly transported into their world as this twisted fairytale comes to life.
The costumes and the set design were outstanding with this one and how the sets were built you feel entirely surrounded by their world.
With many ‘boo holes’ (corners scare actors jump out from) in Goblin’s Feast you’re never quite sure where they’re going to pop out from next. It’s immersive, frantic and fun and the smells within this maze further add to the immersion.
Goblin’s Feast is certainly going to be a fan favourite, it’s a masterpiece!
2. A Quiet Place

Between Ghostbusters and this is a very tough choice because it is wholly dependent on fun / immersive Vs genuine scares with A Quiet Place displaying the latter in spades.
Featuring giant creatures, animatronics and more A Quiet Place is hellbent on throwing you straight into the movie as you walk through an adventure of scenes knowing that any second a creature can swoop in and take you away.
What was so beautiful about the A Quiet Place maze was that you act out the opening scene of the first movie before you’re greeted with the actual title of the movie inside the maze, it’s so bloody clever and is such an iconic introduction to a horror film and now you can live it out over and over again.
With drool-worthy sets of grand scale it was the constant jump scares not knowing what was around the corner and with staggered entry into the maze only your group was allowed to go through at one time, in this case, there were just two of us.
Yes, two.
So for the entire walkthrough, it was just me and a friend I’d met that evening jumping out of our skin all the way around, if this maze is someone’s number one then I can completely understand why, it’s perfection, I had zero faults with it!
1. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Who are you gonna call?
After checking out Frozen Empire before flying out to Florida I was making sure to familiarise myself with the film and the scenes but stepping inside the maze for the first time was like I’d been catapulted straight into the film.
The beautiful frozen scene of the dining room that starts off the movie has been recreated beautifully and walking through each set transports you straight into the film.
Whilst the film was a lot to be desired the scare maze was executed perfectly and whilst I was being jump scared throughout every corner it was more how open my mouth was from start to finish around every corner.
IP mazes at Halloween Horror Nights are usually some of the weaker mazes with the original mazes usually standing out head and shoulders above the rest (using POVs as reference) but Ghostbusters Frozen Empire was truly special, the attention to detail, the costumes, the effects and the fire station… there are not many times in my life inside a scare maze where I’ve stood still and just admired how truly immersive a maze is.
For that brief walkthrough, I was a Ghostbuster and I loved every single second!
Ghostbusters took the title for me instantly! But my question to you is, which is your favourite Halloween Horror Nights maze?
