HBO Boss Says Odds Of A “Succession” Spinoff Are “Very Low” But He’s Open To The Idea

Jan 17, 2024

With its Emmy domination this past weekend, “Succession” has officially ended its run on top of the world. And in this era of spinoffs, sequels, and just franchising everything, it’s surprising that HBO has yet to announce the new “Succession” series. Surely there’s going to be a sequel or a spinoff, right? Well, it appears not.

Speaking to THR, after Emmy night, HBO executive Casey Bloys talked about the possibility of more “Succession” series in the future. That is to say, he basically denied any plans for spinoffs and doesn’t think they’re going to happen in the future.
“Very low,” said Bloys about the odds of a “Succession” spinoff. “As with all these things, I leave it to Jesse [Armstrong] and the creatives to think about that. It’s not something I see happening. If Jesse woke up and had a great idea, of course [we’d want it]. I want to do what Jesse wants to do, but it’s not something I’m pushing for or something Jesse has any interest in doing. The odds are pretty low.”

This isn’t altogether shocking news. Armstrong, who created the series and has been the creative mastermind during its acclaimed run, has publicly said that he doesn’t believe there is a good way to sequelize or spinoff “Succession.” So, he’s not interested in trying. And you can’t blame him, right? Why would you want to sully something that is going to go down as one of the most beloved shows of all time by rushing out some half-assed spinoff?
Thankfully, he’s working with HBO, and that network has really followed the lead of its creative folks. In a world where everything is franchised and quickly run into the ground, HBO has shown (especially with how its handled “Game of Thrones” spinoffs) to be very considerate when deciding when to continue a series or when to spin it off into something else.
So, with that being said, it seems as if “Succession” can now officially be laid to rest, and we can move on to something new. (Perhaps, “Industry?”)
