HBO’s European Horror Series Brings In Paul Giamatti As A Man Trying To End The World

Sep 25, 2023

A few years after Season 1 debuted, we are on the precipice of Season 2 of HBO’s “30 Coins.” Now, if you’re in the U.S., like me, you may be wondering, “What the hell is ‘30 Coins?’” Yeah, well, that’s a good question. All I know is Season 2 brings in Paul Giamatti as a villain looking to end the world, and I’m completely sold.

The reason most of us Americans aren’t familiar with “30 Coins” is because the series was produced by HBO Europe and takes place in Spain. But with Season 2 introducing Giamatti’s character and bringing a more global aspect of the show, it would appear HBO is looking for a big international release for the religious horror series.
“30 Coins” tells the story of the inhabitants of a small town in Spain who are victims of inexplicable demonic events. Not much is known about what happened to that town, other than it involves the coins that were perhaps paid to Judas to have him betray Jesus. But Season 2 ratchets up the intensity, as we see how one man (Giamatti) is trying to bring about the end of the world with the help of the coins.

Season 2 of the series brings in Paul Giamatti and Najwa Nimri, who are joining a cast that includes Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto, Cósimo Fusco, Manolo Solo, Nuria González, Javier Bódalo, and Manuel Tallafé. “30 Coins” is directed by Álex de la Iglesia, who co-wrote the series alongside Jorge Guerricaechevarría.
“30 Coins” Season 2 debuts on HBO and Max on October 23. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Most residents of Pedraza, a remote town in Spain plagued by inexplicable, demonic events, have lost their minds and are confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena (Megan Montaner) lies comatose in a Madrid hospital bed; Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror intensifies around them, our group of heroes must face a mysterious new enemy (Paul Giamatti) – someone so perverse that even the devil fears him.
