How the Ending of Season 2 Leaves Room for a Potential Season 3

Nov 18, 2023

Summary

Loki is hugely popular and considered one of the best MCU miniseries, leaving fans eagerly anticipating a third season or spinoff. The season wrapped up neatly, tying up loose ends and providing emotional satisfaction, but there are still unanswered questions that could lead to a possible third season. While it’s uncertain whether there will be a season 3, writers and producers have left the door open for future opportunities and spinoff series, giving fans hope for more Loki and TVA content.

Marvel fans are cheering for the Loki season 2 finale. It’s been the most popular show on Disney+ and one of the best MCU miniseries Marvel has made. As is the case with extraordinarily popular shows, when one season comes to an end, fans often can’t wait for another. But this time, it seems that, despite the show’s popularity, a third season is unlikely. Nevertheless, certain story beats left the series open for a possible third season or even a spinoff series. In this article, MovieWeb intends to ask the three most important questions about Loki: Could there, should there, and would there be a third season?

Here, we’ve assembled the possible loose ends and ambiguous endings from Loki. But there are many opinions as to whether or not Loki should continue at all. And, as always, we’ve included the all-important hard evidence on the current likelihood of a third season. Here is everything you need to know about the possibility of Loki season 3.

Could There Be a Season 3?
Loki Release Date June 9, 2021 Cast Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Richard E. Grant Main Genre Superhero Seasons 2 Studio Disney+, Marvel Studios
Loki finished on a powerful note. Audiences found themselves emotionally satisfied, and the writers did an excellent job of tying up any loose ends. And they know what they’re looking for since the show was based on a big loose end from Avengers: Endgame. But moments in the final episode might make a third season possible. Despite an excellent conclusion to Loki’s story, there are still some questions left unanswered.

Mobius (Owen Wilson) is left with files on his desk that point him towards his old life. He stands outside his house and watches his old self play with his children. But we don’t know who left the file on his desk. OB (Ke Huy Quan) discovers a box of second-edition TVA guidebooks left in his workshop, and he meets this with an unexpected look as well. One assumes Loki did both these things, but how and why are questions with multiple answers. Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) ascended form of God of Stories (as opposed to God of Mischief) is a Marvel Comics easter egg that has a lot to do with Verity Willis, aka Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku).

Perhaps the biggest loose end in the series is Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). She’s left banished to the void to be hunted by the dreaded monster Alioth. In her last shot, we see the old TVA insignia in the dirt, with its words “For All Time. Always.” According to her comic book history, Renslayer is a time-traveling assassin who continually tries to romance/kill Kang the Conqueror. In this timeline, Renslayer was one of the people who helped He Who Remains (Jonathon Majors) tame Alioth. So, the possibility is always there that she might escape the void to become a new villain for the TVA.

Should There Be a Season 3?

Loki came to such a fine conclusion that most fans are perfectly content with the series ending. Many times, people don’t want to let a good thing go, especially when the story is as good as this. But Loki was wrapped up so neatly that extending the series might just ruin it. It’s a quality of an excellent writer to know when the story they’re telling is finished. Even if producers and studios might demand more from you for the sake of money, it’s a respectable thing to keep your conclusion concluded. Marvel fans are less concerned with seeing more of Loki anyway because it’s always possible for a character from one series to pop up somewhere else in the franchise.

Would There Be a Season 3?

Whether there will be a season 3 is still up for debate. Signs generally point to no, or at least that nothing is confirmed right now. But writers and producers from the Disney+ series have kept their comments strangely open-ended in interviews. Head writer for Loki Eric Martin told CinemaBlend:

“We approached this as like two halves of a book. Season one, first half. Season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA. Where it goes beyond that, I don’t know. I just wanted to tell a full and complete story across those two seasons.”

Series producer Kevin Wright echoed this idea in a completely separate interview, but he added an interesting note when he talked to RadioTimes:

“Season 1 ended with such a cliffhanger that [for] season 2, we didn’t want to do that again. These are two chapters of the same book, we wanted the end of that book to be really fulfilling – and now there’s other books on the shelf we can tell stories from. In all of our streaming going forward, the idea going forward is that all of these should be continuing series, but I would say with this series you have to watch and see!”

So, although there are no current plans for a season 3, it seems certain opportunities lie ahead. As with any popular title, a big studio will want to capitalize on that popularity. And seeing that even a producer might have ideas for a spinoff series could give fans hope to see Loki and the TVA again.
