How the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Super Bowl Trailer Sets Up the End
Feb 21, 2023
The excitement for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5 is on the rise since the phase’s second feature, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has posted one more trailer for fans to gush over until its theatrical release on May 5. Aired in during the 57th Super Bowl, the 140-second-long video clarified that the movie would be the conclusion of the franchise, to fans’ dismay. As cliché as it may be, all good things really must come to an end, even if it’s somewhat a sad one. This fact is confirmed by those involved in the production, too, namely Dave Bautista, who portrays Drax for the last time, and James Gunn, the film’s writer and director.
For a refresher, Gunn is the leading mind behind the entire Guardians of the Galaxy tale and whose MCU career is as eventful as the cinematic creations he contributed — even to the extent that the fate of this third installment was at genuine risk after his infamous firing incident in 2018. Thankfully, all is well, and it seems that Gunn has brought his A-game into this last MCU project of his, judging from the magnificent trailer.
As expected from massive-budgeted production, the clip boasts eye-appeasing visuals. Accompanied by beautifully synced Rainbow’s Since You Been Gone and followed by gripping quotes, the trailer highlights all the defining moments of the movie. If the first trailer’s biggest spotlight falls more on Rocket (Bradley Cooper), this one depicts more clarity on the storyline as well as the perspective of the other Guardians.
Audience Will Witness One Heck of a Last Ride

It’s no longer a secret that the plot revolves around Rocket’s backstory, which then evokes the rise of a genetic-mutation-obsessed villain with a twisted purpose that lies within his so-called sacred mission of creating the perfect society. And Rocket, who was once the victim of the motive, must face him again. But this time, he won’t be alone: the Guardians of the Galaxy are right by his side.

With their starship, the team ventures into the colossal headquarters of said villain, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). Rocket then recalled how that madman didn’t want to make things perfect; he just hated things the way they are. The scene proceeds to show a fragment of Rocket’s flashbacks where his poor, defenseless, younger self is being experimented on. What a painful past.
Surely enough, the man’s hostile intent doesn’t change even years after Rocket’s experiment. The High Evolutionary is certainly committed to fulfilling his mission as we view the havoc he wreaks where explosion trails along. He even goes as far as blatantly commanding to incinerate those who stand in his path.
But of course, our fearless Guardians fight back with their weapons and other specialties, all captured in picturesque shots and, at times, some good-old slow-motion sequences. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) prepares her blades, Nebula (Karen Gillan) wields her upgraded cybernetic sword hand, and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), along with Groot (Vin Diesel), fire blasters all around. Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) pops up, too, or rather flies off at high speed in his golden glory.
The Melancholy and the Fun That Can’t Be Missed
Marvel Studios
The thrills from the abundant feats of physical fights are great and all, but what makes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 extra special is the beautiful bond the group shares and the promise of flying away together into the forever and beautiful sky. When all the actions simmer down, the emotional weight starts to strike, especially when Peter says, “We were always searching for a family… until we found each other.”

No one else couldn’t have said it better. That one line truly is the perfect description of what becoming part of the Guardians of the Galaxy means — how they’ve evolved from professional comrades to one united family. When one member is down, the others are immediately there to pick up, like Gamora taking Rocket while running from the explosion and the wounded Drax supported by Gamora and Mantis (Pom Klementieff).
The dramatic elements prevail as well. Quill looks exceptionally determined to stop the destruction as we see him tackle the High Evolutionary from incredible heights without hesitation, run through the fire, and endure all the pain from what can be assumed as harmful device head-on. Not to mention, Mantis and Drax visibly shed tears, hinting at how much of a tear-jerker the film can get. Though hopefully, the mysterious scene where the team strides through Knowhere with Nebula carrying unconscious Quill will be made clear in a positive light when the complete feature comes out.
Not all moments are melancholic, however, since the humor proves to live, per Guardians of the Galaxy style. Quill starts the trailer by recapping his life history in a brief, comical way. “I’m Star-Lord! I formed the Guardians. Met a girl. Fell in love. That girl died. But then she came back. Came back a total dick.” The last part of the statement is probably uttered since Gamora did slam him against a wall in a less-than-friendly manner. And at the end of the trailer, Quill’s romantic life takes an interesting turn as he, for a moment, actually considers Nebula as a love interest, to which she replies, “Knock it off!”
It seems that we can set our expectations to the max as both the cast and crew have clearly given their best to bring the one spectacular finale to life. All that’s left is for us, the audience, to sit back and enjoy the show when it’s time.
