Hulu’s Entertaining Murder Mystery Has A Flair For The Dramatic
Jan 15, 2024
Summary
Death and Other Details is an entertaining murder mystery series with quirky characters and quality production design. The show struggles with its lead character, Imogene, who lacks depth and fails to elicit empathy. The series embraces color and creativity, but at times feels stylistically and tonally similar to Knives Out, with an overindulgent and complex mystery.
Death and Other Details is one of the many children seemingly birthed from the success of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. As soon as the show begins, it’s clear Hulu may have given the greenlight to series creators Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams to capitalize on the ongoing trend of murder mysteries led by quirky characters. For what it’s worth, Death and Other Details is entertaining and enthralling, even if it takes on more than it should.

Death & Other Details Will Draw Comparisons To Knives Out
Death and Other Details unfolds as many murder mysteries do; we are introduced to an array of characters whose personalities and quirks are on display, so we can quickly come up with a lineup of suspects whose secrets are not so obvious. The show benefits from quality production design and costuming. You can’t have a heightened murder mystery with poorly dressed rich folks. The show feels too stylistically and tonally similar to the Knives Out franchise at times, but the eccentricity of the presentation is appealing, and the series embraces color and creativity over the usual stifled and serious takes of ensemble mysteries.

As the show progresses, time jumps and different perspectives are introduced into the mystery to help create a fuller picture. Still, the rapid change in pace and the additional information and evidence can be overindulgent at times. By the time episode eight rolls around, the mystery unravels so much it almost loses the thread entirely. The mystery and the grander scheme at play are too substantial for its own good, though the show succeeds at pulling us into the rather intimate troubles and revelations of the Collier and Chun families, the wealthy characters at the center of the narrative.
Mandy Patinkin Gives A Standout Performance as Rufus Coteworth
Mandy Patinkin is a great anchor and, although his detective character takes a backseat in the fourth and fifth episodes, he is a solid touchstone who helps ground the narrative. The actor can simultaneously have fun and bring gravitas to the story. He leads an ensemble that mixes familiar faces and new ones, a boon for a show that relies on us accepting the characters as they are. The Colliers aren’t entirely interesting, except for Anna (Lauren Patten), who has the most visible character arc in the family. Leila (Pardis Saremi) also has an impressive story and, though she’s not used effectively, she is captivating.
Aside from Patinkin, Angela Zhou is a standout. Zhou, as Teddy, the ship’s maître d’, plays a surprisingly nuanced and dynamic character. Linda Emond is a hoot as the Interpol agent who joins the investigation, with a distinct personality and haircut that adds to the character’s charms. Annie Qu Riegel’s Winnie, Teddy’s sister, also has a rather transformative turn, giving the actress a more significant role than expected. Ultimately, though, the show has too many characters and threads to keep track of; some of whom add to the drama, but not necessarily the mystery at hand.
The show feels too stylistically and tonally similar to the Knives Out franchise at times, but the eccentricity of the presentation is appealing, and the series embraces color and creativity over the usual stifled and serious takes of ensemble mysteries.
The show struggles the most with its lead, Violett Beane. With impeccable style and a fierce bob, Imogene is a heroine difficult to identify with or even root for. Despite having the biggest storyline — that begins with the murder of her mother — the writing doesn’t do a good job of grounding her in a way that elicits empathy. There are great strides in making her likable. She has a dry sense of humor, and she’s fun, flirty, and smart.
There is meant to be a distinct divide between Imogene and the rich Colliers, who took her in, but the choice of casting and, in particular, styling doesn’t deliver. Sure, she despises them, takes advantage of them, and even steals from them, but she is them in how she carries herself, dresses, and moves about the ship. With little regard for consequences and a sense of superiority, I don’t think the creators or directors sense or distinguish between them.
On paper, there is a likable character, someone who has depth and a multi-faceted personality that includes a vulnerable, jaded, and sympathetic young woman, but Beane is unable to convey that with the direction she is given. With how underserved many of the actors of color are in the show, the role of Imogene would have been a prime opportunity for a woman of color. With racial and ethnic barriers existing in the world of the rich, casting a woman of color as Imogene would have been a surefire way to distinguish Imogene from the Colliers, and Death and Other Details would have benefited from this decision.
That aside, Death and Other Details is engaging overall. Each episode leads to that hook the audience needs to keep watching. The mystery begins as a standard locked-room murder but quickly develops into something bigger, pulling almost every relevant character into the sticky web of corporate conspiracies, familial drama, love, betrayal, blackmail, faith, and more. The final two episodes will either make or break the show. As some of the puzzle pieces begin emerging by episode eight, the show’s finale is brimming with possibility.
