“I Wouldn’t Count on It”

Summary

Fans’ dreams of a
Spider-Man
and
Invincible
crossover are tempered by creator Robert Kirkman’s realistic approach to the idea.
Despite recent buzz over a potential crossover, Kirkman and showrunner Racioppa both acknowledge the logistical challenges involved.
While the possibility of a crossover remains uncertain, fans can look forward to a steadily developing live-action Invincible movie experience.

Fans often find themselves dreaming of the ultimate crossover events. The concept of Spider-Man partnering with the Invincible animated series has captured the imagination of fans. However, the enthusiasm for this idea has been dampened by recent statements from Invincible’s creator, Robert Kirkman.

During a conversation at IGN’s FanFest, Kirkman addressed the speculation head-on. He expressed a wishful sentiment about the possibility of merging the worlds of Amazon’s “Invincible” and Marvel’s Spider-Man, acknowledging the excitement such a crossover would generate. Unfortunately, he also made it clear that fans shouldn’t hold their breath for this to happen. Kirkman stated:

“Would that we could pull the powers of Amazon and Disney and Marvel and everybody together! Wouldn’t that be an amazing thing?
But I wouldn’t count on it. And that’s not a tease.

The speculation gained momentum when Josh Keaton, known for his portrayal of Peter Parker in The Spectacular Spider-Man, was announced as a voice actor for a mystery character in the second season of Invincible. This casting choice set the internet abuzz with theories and hopes for a crossover episode, especially considering the characters’ previous team-ups in comic book issues like “Marvel Team-Up #14” and “Invincible #33.” However, Kirkman’s recent comments suggest that, despite the fan excitement, such a collaboration might be a bridge too far.

Simon Racioppa, the showrunner for Invincible, also weighed in on the possibility of crossovers in an interview with The Hollywood Handle. He expressed enthusiasm for the idea but highlighted the complexities involved in making it a reality. He acknowledged the challenges posed by licensing agreements and the intricate business dealings required to bring characters from different universes together on screen.

Invincible Live-Action Movie Gains Momentum Despite Slow Development

The concept of a live-action Invincible movie has captured attention as fans yearn to see their favorite heroes unite on screen. Kirkman shared some insights into the development process, indicating that it’s moving slowly but steadily. The recent industry strikes have caused delays, but the team is committed to getting it right. He also mentioned the importance of ensuring that the movie complements the animated series and stands out on its own. Kirkman said:

“It’s going through the pipeline slowly. The strikes and everything kind of put a pause on things for a while. We’re just now getting back into that and it’s all very exciting but it’s not something that we’re rushing, it’s something that we definitely want to get right.”
“Now that the show is out and the animated series is doing we’re trying to figure out ways to make sure that it stands apart, works in tandem with the show. To show how cool Invincible is and and doesn’t detract from it in any way. So there’s a lot of maneuvering that has to go into that and so it is taking a little bit of time but I can’t wait for everyone to see Steven Yeun as Cecil Stedman.”

Fans have been enchanted by the notion of Spider-Man venturing into Invincible’s realm, but the feasibility of this crossover is marred by challenges. With the animated series gaining popularity and excitement mounting for a live-action version, Invincible is poised for a promising future, even without a collaboration with the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
