Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One Trailer Breakdown

May 24, 2023

Tom Cruise’s everlasting attempts to shatter bones by jumping off cliffs and continuously running with style to save the day make Mission: Impossible the greatest action franchise in the world. The films in the series have constantly been reinventing themselves and upping the ante with each installment while maintaining hallmark moments such as face masks to fool the bad guys or uncovering spies within the organization.

Mission: Impossible put forward a new mission in front of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) every time, but he always came out on top, despite having to risk everything. The seventh entry in the long-running franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, has released its second and final trailer, which features many footages to leave fans guessing what awaits them in the highly-anticipated film. That being said, here’s a thorough and detailed breakdown of the film’s trailer for better comprehension.

The Past Haunts You Back

The trailer begins with Ethan Hunt riding his bike through a greenish forest at incredible speeds, as if he’s trying to catch up to something or possibly someone, then stopping just at the edge of a massive cliff. Then we hear Kittridge’s voice saying, “Our lives are the sum of our choices. And we cannot escape the past.”

The first time Ethan and Kittridge (Henry Czerny) came face to face was in 1996 when the first Mission: Impossible film was released. In the movie, Kittridge suspected Ethan of being the IMF’s mole, and even though his name was cleared by the conclusion, Kittridge disappeared from the franchise altogether.

In the trailer, we see Ethan emerge from a tunnel and a woman we are unfamiliar with being shot. Soon after, Kittridge warns Ethan again about his mission, saying, “Ethan, this mission of yours is going to cost you dearly,” meaning that he will not only put himself in danger by getting involved with the wrong people, but he may also lose someone close to him.

The War Is Coming

The trailer then shows Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) with an eyepatch holding a sniper rifle in the desert, stating, “The world is changing, the truth is vanishing, and the war is coming,” to which the following scenes provide answers. As is standard, the first footage shows someone breaching a highly secured facility, followed by an underwater battle in which a submarine is blown to smithereens.

In accordance with the trailer, Ilsa and Ethan are on a risky mission in the desert, with the latter riding a horse while carrying an armed firearm on his shoulder.

Not long after that, Ethan encounters the big bad, played by Esai Morales, a completely unknown figure who brags about his power and what he can do to anyone who opposes him.

However, based on his comments, “It’s been a long time, friend,” he could be an IMF agent who has turned against them or an old enemy of Ethan’s, which we will most likely see in the Dead Reckoning. Then we return to Kittridge, who warns Ethan that the world is coming after him and that whatever criminal organization he is dealing with has resolved to assassinate him by any means.

Ethan’s Resolve to Save His Team & the World

Paramount Pictures

As we addressed the possibility of a flashback in the film, the following scene almost makes it possible because it shows Ilsa affectionately embracing Ethan. It might be a flashback or the end of Dead Reckoning Part One, which would provide a satisfying finale before going all out in Part Two.

In response to the earlier event in which the main antagonist (Esai Morales) threatens Ethan, he says, “If anything happens to them, there’s no place I won’t go to kill you,” meaning that this time the agents will be threatened not just for the purpose of the mission but also for the sake of their bond.

Just when we feel, “Wait, is this really Mission: Impossible?” as there are no overwhelming stunts and action scenes, which is the reason audiences adore the franchise, Ethan Hunt does the most dangerous thing ever by jumping off a massive cliff as high as snowy mountains, possibly to save someone. As seen in the clip, when Benji and Luther ask him, “What’s your objective?” he responds, “Your lives always matter more to me than my own.”

The remainder of the sequences in the trailer feature action-filled car chases in which enemies pursue Ethan and even confront the film’s main antagonist on a moving train. The trailer concludes with the iconic Mission: Impossible theme, which includes adrenaline-pumping knife battles, fleeing from encircled foes by launching smoke grenades, and typical Tom Cruise feats that are not safe to try at home.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will be released in theaters on July 12, with Part Two following on June 28, 2024.
