Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Ending, Explained

Jul 9, 2023

Warning: Full spoilers ahead for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the fifth installment in the franchise and manages to fit quite well into the overall arch of Indy’s (Harrison Ford) storyline across all five films. In what feels like a culmination of Indy’s professional work, the ending to the newest movie offers a surprise unlike anything he’s ever seen before. Nothing short of spectacular in the eyes of Indy himself, the moment nearly brings the beloved whip-wielding professor to tears of joy.

Archimedes Dial, also known as the Antikythera, lies at the center of the film. The dial of destiny, as it’s colorfully described, is an ancient device built by Archimedes in 213 BC and believed by many to possess the ability to detect fissures in time, which is just a fancy, more scientific way to say time travel. The dial was split in two at the time of Archimedes’ death to prevent the device from falling into the wrong hands. Upon encountering his goddaughter, Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), after 18 years, Indy is thrust into an endeavor to find both pieces before the Nazis do. Therein lies the premise of the entire movie, with an ending worth dissecting a bit further.

The Ultimate Nazi Plot
Walt Disney Studios

After Indy and Helena find the second half of the dial at the grave of Archimedes, it’s stolen from them by Nazi scientist Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) and the rest of his Nazi goons. They shoot Indy and take him hostage before escaping with the dial as Helena and her sidekick, Teddy (Ethann Isidore), follow close behind, eventually tracking the group to an airstrip where a Nazi plane is standing by.

Voller and his gang board the plane with Indy and plan to fly through a fissure in time created by the dial, so the scientist can change the course of history by returning to Germany before World War II, killing Hitler, and assuming command of the Nazi army himself. He arrogantly believes he will be able to lead the Nazis into the future better than Hitler did.

Unbeknownst to everyone on board, Helena trails behind on a motorcycle and narrowly hops onto the plane via its landing gear just as the wheels leave the ground. With Teddy close behind in a plane he somehow flies himself, all the main characters are set to fly through the time fissure Voller is certain will bring him back to a pre-war Germany.

A Grave Miscalculation
Walt Disney Studios

However, Voller’s hubris leads to a grave mistake. He miscalculated the numbers and overshot his time travel attempt by two thousand years. Rather than a pre-war Germany, the plane arrives at the height of the Battle of Syracuse in 213 BC when Archimedes was in the midst of building the Antikythera.

Believed to be a dragon, the Romans begin firing their weapons at the plane and ultimately destroy its engines, which causes it to crash, killing Voller and the rest of the crew. However, Helena and Indy manage to parachute off the plane just in the nick of time and safely land on the beach before the crash.

A Meeting Like No Other
Walt Disney Studios

After landing on the beach in the middle of an ongoing war, Indy and Helena encounter Archimedes, who has been watching their arrival since the moment they traveled through the fissure. In what feels like a culmination of Indy’s professional life, he and Helena actually speak with Archimedes, which nearly brings Indy to tears. The archeology professor finally comes face to face with something he could have only dreamed of, and as such, Indy indicates he wants to stay behind.

For a moment, it feels as though Indy won’t return to the future as the time fissure begins to close despite Helena’s desperate pleas for him to return with her to the future. However, when her pleading doesn’t seem to work, she punches Indy causing him to blackout and awaken back in their future. Presumably, they board the plane Teddy piloted through the fissure and return to their proper time.

A Heartfelt Reunion
Walt Disney Studios

After Helena knocks Indy out with quite a punch, he awakes in his apartment with her close by. Then, much to the surprise of Indy as well as the audience, Marion (Karen Allen) walks through his front door with Teddy in tow and groceries in hand. Helena clearly contacted Marion upon returning, given what Indy disclosed to her during their time on the boat while searching for the dial.

While on the boat, Indy explained to Helena that if he was given a chance to change the past, he would prevent his son from enlisting in the Korean War because it would inevitably kill him and break his parent’s hearts, ultimately leading to their divorce. Given how much she cares for Indy, Helena sets in motion the much-needed reunion between him and Marion. Shortly after Marion’s return, Helena and the rest of the group head out for ice cream so that Indy and Marion can be left to their reconciliation.

Indy Hangs His Hat for Good?
Walt Disney Studios

In the final shot of the film, Indy’s hat can be seen hanging on the clothesline outside his apartment just before he quickly snatches it off and the credits roll. It’s clear Indy isn’t ready to hang his hat for good. Whether Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will actually be the finale for Harrison Ford and the adventure-seeking Indy, the ambiguity of the ending is clearly a wink to the audience who could always watch more of the beloved whip-wielding archeology professor.
