James Gunn Confirms The First 5 Movies & Shows In The DC Universe
Nov 19, 2024
James Gunn has revealed the first few projects on the new DC Universe’s slate of releases and teased mystery additions. After the end of the old DCEU, Gunn’s new version of the DC franchise starts in a few weeks with Creature Commandos. The animated series is the first of the announced DCU movies and series to premiere, with David Corenswet’s Superman being the franchise’s first movie, set for release in July 2025. Now, Gunn has outlined what will be the first projects in the DCU to be released, including Superman and Creature Commandos.
Speaking with IGN, James Gunn confirmed the first 5 movies and series in the DCU. Peacemaker season 2, HBO’s Lanterns series, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow join Corenswet’s Superman movie and the TV-MA animated series Creature Commandos as the first projects to be released in the DCU. Gunn teased that mystery future DCU projects come after them. During the interview, Gunn also revealed that the Green Lantern series will be released around the Supergirl movie, which means a 2026 release, though he did not specify if it would come out before or after Kara Zor-El’s film. Check out the full quote below:
“It’s really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl. And then some things people don’t know.”

Lanterns Gets A Major Release Update
The first DCU movies and TV shows to be released are more or less what was expected. Some things did shift around, as Viola Davis’ Waller series was once expected to debut sooner, while projects like Lanterns and Peacemaker season 2 have gone through faster development processes. John Cena’s anti-hero will come back in 2025 alongside David Corenswet’s Superman movie, with Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. debuting in December’s Creature Commandos before playing important roles in those two 2025 projects. DC also has its 2026 schedule shaping up nicely.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow releases on June 26, 2026. According to Gunn, Lanterns will also be released around that time, with the Green Lantern series likely coming to HBO a couple of months before or after the Supergirl movie. Not related to the DCU is Robert Pattinson’s The Batman – Part II, which will be released on October 2, 2026. That likely takes out a movie slot for the DCU in 2026. However, there are announced projects with no release dates, like Batman’s The Brave and the Bold movie and HBO’s Booster Gold, which could be released in 2027.
Our Take On James Gunn’s DC Universe Slate Confirmation
The DCU Is Off To A Strong Start
I think that the first 5 movies and TV shows set to be released in the DCU offer a nice variety to grab the attention of different audiences. Creature Commandos is a TV-MA animated series, while Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow are classic superhero tentpoles with plenty of world-building. Peacemaker season 2 continues a beloved and violent TV series, and Lanterns brings cosmic heroes to Earth for a dark and mature mystery. All of those projects sound interesting, making sure that Gunn’s DC Universe sets up several exciting characters and storylines to follow in the franchise’s future.
This animated series follows a covert team of monstrous inmates recruited for perilous missions deemed unsuitable for humans. United by secrecy and necessity, the Creature Commandos tackle extraordinary threats, serving as the ultimate option when traditional forces fall short. Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.” John Cena stars as Christopher Smith, AKA the titular Peacemaker in James Gunn’s spin-off/sequel TV series to The Suicide Squad. Set after the film’s events, Peacemaker follows the misguided hero with a vanity complex but believes in peace, no matter how large the body count he has to rack up to get it. Having survived his mission in the Suicide Squad (Aka Task Force X), he’s been enlisted again to join a new team and save the world. With his blade eagle sidekick, Eagly, Peacemaker will embark on a misguided quest for peace as he fights to do the right thing – as wrongly as possible. Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and veteran Hal Jordan, two members of the Green Lantern Corps, as they unravel a dark, Earth-bound mystery while investigating a murder in the American heartland. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of many DC movies being released by Warner Bros. under the supervision of DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was officially confirmed in January 2023 alongside other DC titles, including Superman: Legacy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing.
