James Gunn Teases Upcoming Projects with Margot Robbie
Jul 25, 2023
Margot Robbie has achieved what very few actors or actresses have in their entire career, becoming the absolute face of a character. While Kaley Cuoco’s Harley Quinn has been hugely successful in an adult and animated format, it didn’t make quite as big a splash as Robbie’s version on the big screen. But will we see her in the new DCU?
After her first appearance in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Harley became a DC icon on film, with Robbie fully exploiting the popularity of the character born in Batman: The Animated series. Such was her success that we saw her again in 2020 with her own film, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, and in 2021 with the reboot of The Suicide Squad, which brought her back together with Amanda Waller from Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag.
However, recent changes to the DCU at the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran seem to bode poorly for the future of some of the characters we’ve already met. Fortunately, it looks like Robbie’s Harley might be safe. Or at least that’s what the fans interpreted after this interaction from Gunn on Twitter:
Of course, this does not confirm that what they are going to do together is in DC. In fact, even if it were, Margot could return to the franchise with another character, as Gunn has opened the door for longtime members of the DCU to return in revamped roles. Something that could happen, for example, with Jason Momoa and the possibility of him playing Lobo, leaving Aquaman behind.

The Next Harley Quinn
While we wait to find out whether or not Margot Robbie will return, Cuoco will continue to lend her voice to the character on the hit animated series. But it won’t be the only Harley Quinn that fans will be able to enjoy in the near future.
Joker 2 will introduce the companion of the leading villain, with Lady Gaga behind the role. The actress is currently working alongside Joaquin Phoenix on the sequel, which has been revealed to feature musical elements, titled Folie à Deux, which refers to an induced delusional disorder, also known as shared psychotic disorder, a rare condition characterized by psychotic symptoms in two or more individuals who maintain a close relationship.
The characters will meet in an iconic Gotham City place, Arkham Asylum, as it happened in the origin story of Harley and in Suicide Squad, too, with Jared Leto playing the Joker in that version.
