James Gunn to Meet With Matt Reeves to Discuss The Batman & DCU

Mar 20, 2023

Matt Reeves and James Gunn have both made it clear that there are no plans for The Batman to enter the DCU, but Reeves has recently revealed that he will be meeting up with Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran this month to discuss his “Bat-verse” plan and how it will run in parallel to the upcoming DCU reboot.

There is a lot of expectation and apprehension among fans over how the new DC slate will look following the arrival of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and while an announcement is still somewhere just over the horizon, Matt Reeves appears to have a very clear idea of the future of The Batman. While speaking to Yahoo!, Reeves revealed that his upcoming meeting will be an exciting opportunity to discover how the two different franchises can exist side by side. He said:

“We’ve talked a few times. I’m supposed to get together with him and Peter sometimes this month. They’ve been working feverishly on what they’re doing, and I’ve been working hard with my partners on what we’re doing — all our shows and stuff. So we’re gonna have a sit-down where we talk about everything that’s going on and what the arcs of these two things are. I’m excited to hear about what they’re doing. They have a big plan, and I have this big Bat-verse plan. It’s just about us really getting to know each other. It’s going to be fun.”

Will The Batman Universe Overcome Initial Doubts From Some Superhero Movie Fans?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Even without knowing exactly what James Gunn and Peter Safran are planning for the DCU, there is no doubt that it will be on a completely different level to Matt Reeves world of The Batman. For this reason there should be no reason why the two cannot co-exist in the coming years. While James Gunn’s writing style and previous work suggests that the new DCU will be full of flare and spectacle, Reeves will continue to keep The Batman grounded, which is something that did not sit well with some fans who expected it to follow the usual big screen Batman trend of wise-cracking villains and flashy gadgets.

What sets Matt Reeves vision of Gotham City is the lack of everything that Batman’s previous screen outings have become synonymous with over the years since Michael Keaton first donned the cowl in 1989. The Batman was a brooding, slow paced mystery with a young Bruce Wayne at its heart, giving the world a completely new type of Batman to any of those who have come before, and probably any that will come after it. With a spin-off TV show based on Colin Farrell’s Penguin set to film in the coming months and a second show centering on Arkham Asylum in development, as well as The Batman 2 being working on by Reeves right now, despite its dark take on the superhero genre, The Batman Universe has a bright future.
