Jason Momoa Says He Will Keep Playing Aquaman as Long as People Are Interested

Dec 25, 2022

The DCEU star doesn’t plan on leaving the franchise anytime soon.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Jason Momoa began playing Aquaman in 2016, appearing in a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The actor has enjoyed his king of the sea character and tells The Hollywood Reporter he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Momoa is set to reprise his role in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which just received a delay until December 2023.

During the red carpet premiere of his AppleTV+ series, See, THR discussed the upcoming sequel with the actor, and Momoa revealed just how much the film means to him.

“We wrote a great story. I was one of the writers on it and the minute we finished [Aquaman] I went in with a 50-page outline for the second one and they used it and they liked it. It’s got my heart in it. I feel very connected to the character and have played him across, what, four movies now?”

When asked whether he wants to continue playing Aquaman after the sequel, Momoa said he will portray him “As long as we can.”

“As long as we can. If people don’t like it and it feels like it’s past its due date, then we won’t make another one. But if they love it, then we will make more, you know. I don’t want to force anything down someone’s throat to watch it. But I love it.”

Despite the overall reception of the DC Extended Universe, the films have undoubtedly been huge money-makers. Momoa has appeared in Batman v Superman, which generated $873 million, Justice League and Zack Snyder’s subsequent version with another $657 million, and Aquaman with an astounding $1.1 billion. The box office talks, and it’s telling Jason Momoa to keep making movies.

Jason Momoa is Confident in David Zaslav

Warner Bros.

David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, has constantly been in the headlines over the past month. The massive shakeups within the company have resulted in numerous cancelations and a new 10-year-plan for the DCEU. The direction the films are headed will be drastically different from the Michael Keaton-centered universe that was coming to fruition before Batgirl’s axed movie. When speaking to THR, they asked Momoa what his thoughts are on Zaslav’s vision for the future of DC.

“That’s an interesting question. I just trust in them to make the right decisions, and I gotta stay in my lane.”

Black Adam is the next film on DC’s slate, arriving in theaters on Oct. 21. Shazam: Fury of the Gods will be next, arriving in March 2023, with The Flash coming in June 2023. Finally, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters in December next year. Following the release of the Aquaman sequel, fans should be getting a better idea of where the DCEU is headed.
