Josh Safdie Will Direct Adam Sandler’s Next Upcoming Netflix Comedy Special

Feb 12, 2024

In this uncertain world, one thing remains very clear when it comes to the filmmaking duo of the Safdie Brothers and their ongoing collaboration with Adam Sandler. While the filmmakers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, who directed Sandler in the film “Uncut Gems,” have parted ways to direct their own solo movies, their friendship and collaboration with the Sandman remains strong.
While the upcoming Josh Safdie film starring Adam Sandler, said to be set in the world of 1990s baseball card trading and memorabilia, may be in doubt—Safdie may have lost his window to shoot Sandler in the feature to do the 2023 SAG/AFTRA and WGA strikes—their bond remains solid. Today, Netflix announced that Safdie will direct Sandler’s upcoming, untitled all-new comedy special, his second for Netflix following 2018’s Emmy-nominated “100% Fresh.”

It’s nice to see that even if that film isn’t moving forward, at least at the moment, Sandler seems committed to keeping his Safdie bestie (and presumably crew) with work.
The new comedy special continues Sandler’s prodigious partnership with the streamer. He has starred in a number of global hit Netflix films, including “Leo,” “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,” “Hustle,” “Murder Mystery,” “Murder Mystery 2,” “Hubie Halloween,” “Sandy Wexler,” “The Week Of,” “The Do-Over” and  the Western, “The Ridiculous 6.” The Netflix partnership started circa 2013 and has not diminished since.
Additionally, Madison’s production company, Happy Madison, has produced “Father of the Year,” “The Wrong Missy,” and “The Outlaws.” In fact, outside the “Transylvania” animated movies for Sony and A24’s aforementioned “Uncut Gems,” Sandler has almost exclusively made movies for the streamer ever since he cut his big deal with them way back when. His next Netflix film, “Spaceman,” from director Johan Renck, will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and stream on Netflix on March 1. Sandler’s movies have grossed more than $3 billion dollars worldwide.
Below, the trailer for Sandler’s last Netflix comedy special.
