Kathryn Bigelow Has A New Movie Brewing At Netflix, Idris Elba & Rebecca Ferguson In Talks To Star
Jun 13, 2024
Kathryn Bigelow is back, and in a big way. Deadline reports that the female director returns with her first movie since 2017’s “Detroit” for an untitled Netflix feature. What’s more, Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson are in talks to star a trifecta no one knew they needed until now.

A plot and title remain under wraps, but the film will be a thriller set in the White House as a national crisis unfolds. Bigelow’s last three films dealt with American political intrigue on various scales, so no surprise she return to do something similar here. But whether this movie is a “Civil War,” “White House Down,” or something more like “Leave The World Behind” is unclear right now. Puck previously reported that the film’s about a ballistic missile attack on the US, but, again, Bigelow could film that premise in any number of genre styles. It’s also worth nothing Bigelow had another film in development at Netflix, an adaptation of David Koepp‘s novel “Aurora“ (ironically about a national crisis after a solar flare knocks out the world’s power), but the project fell through earlier this Spring.
Still, Bigelow potentially working with Elba and Ferguson is exciting news. Both actors recently starred in Apple TV+ series, Elba in “Hijack” and Ferguson in “Silo,” which starts its second season soon. Other recent work for Ferguson includes “Dune: Part Two,” last year’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” and the upcoming Prime Video flick “Mercy” with Chris Pratt. As for Elba, he currently stars (albeit doing voice work) in the Paramount+ “Sonic The Hedgehog” series “Knuckles.” He also recently starred in Netflix pics “Luther: The Fallen Sun” and “Extraction II.” “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” and the Amazon MGM actioner “Heads Of State” are on the horizon for the actor.
As for Bigelow, the upcoming Netflix pic will be her first movie in seven years. “Detroit” did well with critics, but it wasn’t an awards season darling like 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” or 2008’s Oscar Best Picture winner “The Hurt Locker.” But Bigelow’s also had a long, celebrated directing career. Her feature directorial debut came in 1981 with “The Loveless,” and she followed that up with a string of cult hits over the next decade, including “Near Dark,” “Blue Steel,” and “Point Break.” Her last film credit was as an executive producer in 2018’s “Triple Frontier,” also no slouch of an action film; so it’s great news to see Bigelow back in the directing mix.
Stay tuned for more news about Kathryn Bigelow’s next movie, which, given her career, will be an absolute knockout.
