Kevin Feige Explains How All MCU Projects Are Given a Post Mortem As Part Of An Ongoing Learning Curve

May 12, 2023

The workings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been mostly kept hidden away from public view, but recently Kevin Feige has been revealing a little bit of behind-the-scenes information on how exactly the recent phase of the MCU was put together. While addressing some of the criticisms surrounding the most recent phase, Feige explained that there is always a lot of learning from every TV show and movie created by Marvel Studios. He told The Movie Business Podcast:

“It was a whole new opportunity to stretch and work out a different storytelling muscle for us. But I do think… that on every project one works on you need to take your lessons. And we do a post-mortem on every project, or at least we try to if we’re not too busy with the next project, to sit and discuss what went right and what went wrong.”

The first three phases of the MCU created an unbelievable change of over 20 interconnecting movies that came to a climax with Avengers: Endgame, one of the most visually stunning superhero movies ever put on the big screen. Since then, the franchise has branched out into television and within the Multiverse Saga, will put out more than double the titles of the Infinity Saga. For some people, the dip in spectacle and scope of Phase 4 was seen as a misstep, but in the grand scheme of things, it was exactly what was needed to temper expectations for Phase 5.

Kevin Feige Has No Worries About Marvel Fatigue Setting In
The sheer volume of the MCU projects currently in development has led to many expecting that, at some point, there will be an onset of Marvel fatigue. However, from 2022’s box office, it is clear that movies offered up by the MCU are still one of the biggest guaranteed money-spinners.

When talking about how Phase 4 has been seen as a disappointment to those who expected the threat level of Avengers: Endgame to be maintained indefinitely, Feige had a simple way of explaining why that is not how things panned out. He said:

“Each of our sagas are broken into phases and we now find ourselves on the precipice of Phase 2 of the Multiverse Saga. And there are two ways to do it. One, we look at an overarching narrative, always using the comics and the 80-plus years of Marvel comic history as our guide of what general, long-term story we want to do. But really, it comes down to each individual film or series, and what type of genre we want to do.”

With Phase 4 of the MCU, Marvel Studios were given the freedom to experiment with some of the less conventional characters and tones of Marvel Comics. While that has not always been something that has quite hit the mark, it certainly seems that it will help pave the way for future projects. As Phase 5 kicks off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it is time to see what lessons have been learned so far.
