Lewis Capaldi Documentary Review: Heart on Sleeve Material

Apr 15, 2023

Named after his brand new single the Lewis Capaldi ‘How I’m Feeling Now’ documentary takes a small peek into the life of Lewis Capaldi but focuses mainly on the artist’s mental health and serves as an awareness and celebration of this wonderful artist. Enjoy this Lewis Capaldi documentary review.

This intimate, all-access documentary chronicles Lewis Capaldi’s journey from a scrappy teen with a viral performance to a Grammy-nominated pop star.
The sudden success of Lewis Capaldi saw the Scottish star skyrocket to fame and not only endure the stresses of that but endured his own struggle with an ongoing condition. From pubs and clubs one minute to stadium tours the next this whirlwind experience is a documentary but is shot much like a VLOG. It’s a nice way of shooting the documentary and feels much more laid back in its approach.
Most of the documentary is shot in this format except for the odd sit-down chat to the camera segments which for me distracted me from the storytelling of what the vlog style POV format was doing so perfectly.
Lewis’s cheeky chappy humour oozes through from start to finish and not one second was wasted on exploring just how genuine and down-to-earth Lewis still remains even after this quick rise to fame. He’s fully aware of his rise to stardom but still remains down-to-earth, relatable and easygoing.
His self-deprecating humour almost has a ‘Chandler’ vibe to it as humour is used to cover Lewis’s insecurities about his twitches and anxieties / overthinking about his songs, his career and how people perceive his music.

This Lewis Capaldi documentary skips the lavish lifestyle, the parties, the fancy cars and jets and music videos and focuses on home life and those around him. It has a very homely and family vibe much like the Billie Eilish documentary. I relate to these documentaries more as at the end of the day these artists are human and I’d much rather get to know the person rather than the persona.
Whilst we do get a little anecdote from Lewis about a certain time with Ed Sheeran and a nice email from Elton John it never comes across as a ‘look at me’ type of situation. It’s done in such a genuine and heartfelt manner and I have such respect for Lewis after seeing this documentary.
The obstacles he has had to overcome and the fact that he’s constantly at the top of his game despite his own struggles is a testament to his grit and determination. His charm is addictive and his personality is infectious. You can see him for him during this documentary, there’s no shying away from it and no hiding who he is.
It’s that openness and honesty that I really took from this documentary and this down-to-earth chappy deserves all the successes that life throws at him. He’s a real one and in today’s world ESPECIALLY in the music business that’s a rare thing indeed.
Now streaming on Netflix, I highly recommend you jump on over there and check it out. A rare gem in the music industry and I wish him all the continued success in the world.
