Limited Series 2024 Emmys Predictions And Contenders
Mar 29, 2024
If any Emmy category actually deserves eight nominations this year, it’s Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Unfortunately, the Television Academy has once again decided to restrict this particular field to just five nominees. And, in 2024, that’s going to mean a ton of snubs as a deluge of eligible programs have been released over the past 12 months.
And, no, we’re not exaggerating.

There are probably only two locks for a nomination this time around: HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” and FX’s “Fargo.” The other three slots are seemingly up for grabs. One show that has a better shot than its competitors, is another FX program, “Shogun.” Already one of the most critically acclaimed series of the year, it appears to be a significant hit on Hulu (we’ll know more next week once Nielsen ratings are released). After that? Let us consider the possibilities.
Apple TV+ has two likely contenders: “Lessons in Chemistry,” which earned many key guild nominations since its fall debut, and the Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg produced “Masters of the Air,” which has cracked Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming chart multiple times (not an easy feat for an Apple program). Also premiering just in time to crash the party is Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar‘s adaptation of the Pulitizer-Prize-winning novel “The Sympathizer” starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Sandra Oh, among others. That HBO program arrives on April 14.
Other series looking for love include FX and Ryan Murphy’s “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” Netflix’s tearjerker “One Day,” Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” with Lily Gladstone (likely competing in a stacked Lead Actress category), Showtime and Paramount+’s buzzworthy “Fellow Travelers,” and Starz’s scandalous and fun “Mary and George” starring Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine.
But wait, there’s more.
Peacock has “Apples Never Fall” with Annette Bening and Sam Neil, Apple TV+ also has “Franklin” with Michael Douglas as the Revolutionary era inventor, Elisabeth Moss is a British spy in FX’s globetrotting “The Veil,” the Sofia Vergara mob thriller “Griselda” was a smash for Netflix, Andrew Scott and Steve Zaillian team up for a new Netflix adaptation of “Ripley,” Ewan McGregor is a “Gentleman in Moscow” for Showtime and Paramount+, and in some strange timeline HBO’s messy “The Regime” with Kate Winslet somehow cracks the field. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Really. [Posted March 29]
