Lionsgate Developing A Reboot TV Series Of The Teen Vampires Hit
Apr 19, 2023
Lionsgate is behind an upcoming “Hunger Games” prequel film with “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” looking to expand that story with a different setting without having a pricey star like Jennifer Lawrence return. However, that’s not the only young adult genre franchise from their IP library they’re looking to resurrect from the grave as a series reboot based on the “Twilight” franchise is in the works at Lionsgate Television.

THR has revealed that a series is in early development with seasoned TV writer Sinead Daly (“The Get Down,” “Raised By Wolves”) involved to help figure out what direction they’ll be going with it. Daly is not currently named as the untitled project’s showrunner, but it may include the original author’s involvement. However, the show isn’t a complete lock as it doesn’t have a home and will go out to buyers.
The movies had been more of a short-term lark than anything else, as the adaptations of the Stephenie Meyer novels had very little to do with established horror lore. The film franchise relied heavily on the teen audience being invested in the love triangle between a human teen Bella, a teenage vampire named Edward, and Jacob, a hunky werewolf who rarely wears a shirt. One of the weirder things from the small widow of “Twilight” fever was the fan fiction that became the basis for the “50 Shades of Grey” books/films. So, there is undoubtedly a market for a kinkier version of “Twilight” if Lionsgate is game, but maybe they’ll continue to lean into the teen melodrama angle of it all.
Thankfully, we won’t have to worry about original leads Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart returning as those actors have seen their careers bloom to the point they don’t need to rehash their “Twilight” roles, which might explain why this is heading towards a reboot rather than a continuation. Both actors have long outgrown the franchise and gone on to great, critically-acclaimed careers, which means that new young actors will likely be courted to play these roles.
