‘Loki’ Season 2 EP on Season 3 & Loki’s Relationships with Sylvie and Mobius

Editor’s Note: The following contains full spoilers for the Loki Season 2 finale.
The Big Picture
Executive producer Kevin Wright discusses the possibility of a Season 3 for Loki, stating that while they treated Season 2 as an ending, he would love to continue telling stories with the same team. It was always the plan for Loki to end up on the throne at the end of the season, but the important aspect was the emotion behind that moment rather than just the act itself. There were never any plans for a post-credit scene in Season 2, and the focus was on telling the story they set out to make without setting up other shows or movies. Wright has actively pitched ideas for future stories involving other Loki characters .
With two full seasons of Loki under the belt, it seems, for the time being, that the god of mischief’s story is over. At least, this arc of his story is over at least. After a momentous and universe-changing finale, we spoke with executive producer Kevin Wright about that ending and where Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finds himself when the credits roll. After travelling through time and space trying to save all of existence and, more importantly, trying to protect his friends, Loki put the literal weight of the world onto his shoulders and gathered together all the expanding branches of the timeline himself. From being a variant of the god of mischief, pulled out of time thanks to the tesseract following the battle of New York, to becoming the literal embodiment of Yggdrasil, there was a lot to break down with this episode.
Wright, one of the main creatives behind the series, spoke with Collider about both the events of Season 2 and where we could go beyond this story. He talked about potential plans for Season 3 and whether it was always the plan to have Loki ending up on the throne at the end of time, and if there was ever a post-credit scene — something that the MCU has become known for. Wright also talked about actively pitching ideas around the other show characters and what avenues of the story he wants to explore. Finally, he talked both about the romance between Loki and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) and the nature of Loki’s relationship with Mobius (Owen Wilson).

Are There Plans for Season 3 of Loki?
COLLIDER: Are there any plans for a Season 3, or is this where this arc of Loki’s story is ending?
KEVIN WRIGHT: I’m gonna say two things that probably conflict. We always treated this like this would be it. I think part of that is just a logistical, creative thing of “let’s treat it like we’re not gonna get a third season,” so that you tell the best, most fulfilling story that you can in one season. Further than that, I would say, I really love this team that we’ve built over two seasons. There’s been some different parts, but like between Kate [Herron], and Justin [Benson] and Aaron [Moorhead], and Eric [Martin], and [Michael] Waldron and all of our amazing department heads, I would love to keep telling stories with this team. Whether that’s a Loki Season 3 or something else. We’ll see what Marvel needs us, and wants us to do. But I think this is an awesome world. They’re great characters, and if the right story is there for us, I think all of us would love to keep this going. I certainly would.
I’m also curious if it’s always been the plan since Season 1 to have Loki end up where he ends up at the end of the season.
WRIGHT: Roughly, yes. How we were going to get there was always a real high wire act of how you were gonna get him there. You put your cards on the board, and it’s like that was always the one that was all the way at the end, of him getting on a throne somehow. There were a lot of gaps in the middle that we had to figure out how to do that. It’s less important that he’s on the throne, and was more “what do you want the audience to feel when he finally gets it?” And that was the thing, it took a while to land the right emotion for that moment.
Was that emotion supposed to be “devastated”? Because that’s a little bit how I felt at the end of that season.
WRIGHT: I would say this, there’s versions of that could, that could have been done purely heroic and that I don’t think would ever have been honest or fulfilling. And I think Natalie [Holt]’s music beautifully walks the line of “This is the most powerful, awesome thing that you’ve ever seen Loki do” and “Oh my God, is this not heartbreaking?”
Yeah, definitely, Natalie’s music is amazing, especially in this episode. Were there ever any plans for a post-credit scene? Because that’s obviously pretty popular in the MCU, but I was surprised and also happy that there wasn’t a post credit scene. But were there ever plans? Was there one in place, and then it was taken out?
WRIGHT: We never even wrote one.
Oh, ok. Well, good to know.
WRIGHT: There was never one written. There was never one shot. I would leave it at that. I think this was, I said it elsewhere, like early at the beginning of when the show first started coming on. But the story that’s on-screen is the one that we set out to make. And all of us, the writers, directors, VFX, everybody, held hands, and we’re like, “This is what we’re doing, right? All right,” and were in lockstep and sold it to Kevin [Feige] and everybody at Marvel, and they let us do it. There was never even a conversation about setting other shows up or other movies up. We just got to tell our story, which was really cool.
Will We See Characters Like Sylvie and Mobius Again?
I think your show benefited from that a lot, actually. But I’m curious, looking into the future, are there any talks of when we’ll see some of these other characters again? Like, obviously, Sylvie and Mobius were big characters in this show and I think people fell in love with them a lot. Is that something that you guys are having conversations about?
WIRHGT: I’ve been actively pitching what we could do with these characters going forward, and that just out of love for having worked on this show for five years now. Where they fit into the bigger picture and, ultimately, Kevin and Brad Winderbaum, our Head of Streaming now, what they want to do. I think it will ultimately come up to them. But I would love to keep telling stories with the TVA, with Mobius with Ke [Huy Quan] and O.B., and all those characters. I would love to tell more Sylvie stories. I just think it’s about finding the right ones, and finding ones that make sense for what we’re trying to do as a studio. But I would love to keep doing it with our Loki team.
Well, I have to move on to some burning questions that both myself and the fans have.
WRIGHT: Of course.
Exploring Sylvie and Loki’s Romance in Season 2

Yes, you kind of know the direction that I’m going with. Obviously, in Season 1, there was kind of an emphasis on the relationship between Sylvie and Loki and I really like that. I enjoyed that. There is a downplay of the romantic element in this season, and I was wondering if there was ever a decision to “love them up more” or if it was always just to focus more on Loki’s story in the season,
WRIGHT: I would disagree with the assessment that we downplayed the relationship. They may not be stopping to kiss. Everything is driven because of the deep emotions that these two people have for one another. Everything that happens this season, I think, is still a ripple effect from Sylvie feeling deeply wounded and saying like, “why aren’t we seeing this the same way?” This person is probably the first person in her life she ever opened up to. And Loki trying to get this person who he’s seeing is making the same mistakes that he made in the MCU 10 years ago, going down these blind paths of vengeance and anger and all this, and he’s trying to prevent this person from going down that path, because he deeply loves them and cares about them. I think the reason you’re just not seeing those cute moments with them is the story is so heightened this season and it’s so escalated that there isn’t moments for it. You get that in Season 1 because they get stuck on a train together on Lamentis and you get to have that romantic moment, because two characters who at that moment can’t stand each other than have to spend an afternoon together, and an evening on the train. Or they get stuck in the void together. They just don’t have those moments to get on the same page.
But I don’t think we’re downplaying it and I don’t think there was a pivot. I think it felt natural, and more realistic, and messy, and I think that was our thing is like real relationships are messy. And we wanted to do that and not force something that felt inauthentic, just to like service fan dreams of seeing these two happy together. They both need a lot of personal work to get to a place where they could have a good relationship.
Do Mobius and Loki Have a Platonic Relationship?

You know what, that’s what fanfic is for. But closing out, I have to ask about Mobius and Loki as well. Some people have definitely felt that there is something more than just platonic between these two characters. Was there ever a consideration of leaning into a romance between these two characters? Or was it always meant to be — I don’t know if platonic is the best word for it — but less romantic?
WRIGHT: I think platonic is the word. I think we don’t see enough platonic, healthy, beautiful relationships between men in TV. And I think that is why that relationship was so beautiful and disarming to people, because how often do you see two men being able to open up and actually speak about their feelings? And I think that that was something in that first episode that Mobius was able to do really beautifully. He was basically saying, “I see you, I see the pain that you’re in. I see the bad things that you did. That’s OK. I’m not judging. Let’s talk and find a way to you becoming the best version of yourself,” and I think that was exciting.
Even something in our Episode 2, Emma McCleave, our editor, really fought to preserve [was] that longer version of those two guys in the pie room, in the automat, because she was like, “It’s really nice to see people actually having healthy conversations about thoughts and feelings and that’s a good thing to be putting out in the media to combat toxic masculinity. So I think it’s beautiful that people could read that relationship in other ways. It was never the intention. But also, we can’t get into Loki’s head and Loki, as a character, is bisexual and gender-fluid, and I don’t know. But it wasn’t something that we were ever exploring, I would say.
All of Loki is available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
