Love and Thunder’s Korg Show Up in Future MCU Projects?

Nov 26, 2023

Thor: Love and Thunder rocked. Many of the beloved characters that populate the God of Thunder’s solo film franchise were present in the movie, which saw a successful theatrical release on July 8, 2022. Of course, star Chris Hemsworth reprised his role as the titular god, making him an actor with one of the longest-continuous portrayals of a superhero. Additionally, Natalie Portman returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reprise her role as scientist Jane Foster, Thor’s primary love interest.

Thor: Love and Thunder didn’t only rock figuratively. Korg was amid the myriad of characters who made their way back onto the silver screen via the MCU. Audiences first met the delightfully simple-minded rock monster when he was first introduced to Marvel fans in Thor: Ragnarok. Korg was an unwilling combatant in the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) Contest of Champions.

Since his introduction, Korg has proven a valuable ally to Thor. The creature is as gifted with his hefty club as he is socially maladroit. The character’s near-constant faux pas have endeared him to Marvel audiences to the point where it’s difficult to imagine Thor going on an adventure without the rock monster at his side. So, how could Korg be utilized in future projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Let’s explore a few options open to Marvel Studios.

Update November 19, 2023: This article has been updated following the trailer for What If…? season 2 and recent comments from Taika Waititi surrounding the Thor franchise.

Taika Waititi’s Involvement with Marvel
Marvel Studios

Korg is voiced by Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder (and one of the writers of Love and Thunder). The past two Thor films have been credited with reviving the God of Thunder’s solo film franchise, the original two films of which were more on the serious side than Waititi’s humorous offerings (although Ragnorak was more well-received than Love and Thunder). The director’s success with the Thor franchise would most likely warrant him another opportunity to make a Marvel movie.

However, on the Next Goal Wins press tour, Waititi revealed he won’t be involved in a fifth Thor movie, if one were to happen. Although Waititi does not intend to make a third Thor movie at this time — or even an MCU film unrelated to the God of Thunder — that doesn’t mean Korg could not return.

When speaking with Insider about not making a fifth Thor film, Taika Waititi made it clear that he enjoyed working with Marvel before and that it’s all right for them to move forward with the Thor franchise without him. He told the outlet:

“I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

That implies that Waititi would voice Korg again or maybe even direct another MCU project further down the line.

Perhaps Waititi would be willing to make a cameo as Korg in a Thor or Marvel movie directed and/or written by someone else. The rock monster would certainly brighten up any MCU project.

Korg’s Comedic Narrative Style
Marvel Studios

Korg is the narrator of Thor: Love and Thunder, and his background monologues, which are filled with misunderstandings and malapropisms, are one of the funniest parts of the overall hilarious film. Furthermore, because Korg seems to have an almost childlike understanding of the world, using the character as a narrator is a convenient way to clearly explain convoluted plot points. It would be an interesting choice to have Korg serve as a narrator in another MCU project down the line.

He would not need to be in the background of an entire film, as another movie that heavily features his gravelly voice-over work might begin to grate on audiences. However, if Taika Waititi is willing to lend his voice to the character again, even a brief moment of Korg’s narration could be a hilarious joke for Marvel fans. Perhaps Korg could be a voice-over assistant to one of the more meta characters in the extended Marvel universe, such as Deadpool.

In the lead-up to the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, there was a lot of discussion surrounding the film’s reported LGBTQ+ overtones. Any MCU fan hoping to see queer representation interspersed with the God of Thunder’s ax-wielding antics must have been delighted with Korg. The rock monster mentions earlier in the film that his species procreates through a prolonged, same-sex hand-holding ritual that takes place near an active lava flow. At the end of the movie, audiences see him holding hands with his partner, Dwayne (a name revealed by Taika Waititi to be a spoof on real-life actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), as they begin the arduous process of Kronan procreation.

Marvel fans will almost certainly demand to see Korg’s new igneous infant in an upcoming film. An adorable, invulnerable little rock monster would create the potential for countless hilarious storylines (and could also bring about merchandising opportunities that the MCU hasn’t seen since Baby Groot). Maybe Thor could be on babysitting duty for Korg and Dwayne’s little bundle of joy? This sounds like a promising Disney+ series or even a series of shorts similar to I Am Groot.

Where Could Korg Show Up Again
Marvel Studios

As of this writing, the only project Korg is confirmed to appear in is What If…?. The animated series shows various realities in the Marvel Multiverse, and Korg is set to appear in an episode of season 2 set on Sakaar. He could also likely show up in any episode of the season since the nature of What If…? allows for wild possibilities.

As for mainline MCU storylines, that is tricky. An obvious pick would be She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season 2, as Korg would fit right at home in the series because of the show’s style of humor. But Marvel Studios has not confirmed or greenlit season 2 of that series, so that is all speculation. While Korg has a connection to Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the future of those two properties is uncertain, so if Marvel doesn’t know where to put them, Korg is likely not a major priority.

Two wild swings, but if Marvel Studios wanted to, Korg could fit right into both Wonder Man and the eventual Young Avengers project. Wonder Man will be concerned with Simon Williams, an actor who becomes a superhero. With the return of Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, the show might be more comedic in nature, and Korg could fit in as part of Simon’s entourage. Maybe Korg is also trying to break out in Hollywood.

As for The Young Avengers, Korg could be the team’s guardian, similar to a fun uncle. He could provide them a base of operation and take care of their base while they deal with superheroes. It would certainly provide for some great comedic banter between Korg and the young heroes. Korg’s future in the MCU is uncertain at the moment, but fans are certainly hoping to see more of him around. He is just one of the many great supporting characters that have made the MCU so enjoyable for fans.
